Lifesaving medals were awarded posthumously to Eston Leonard White Charles Grady Mack and Alton A Edlund all of Myrtle Beach for heroic action on Sept 12 1971 during a Coos Bay rescue. Coast Guard Admiral Joseph J McClelland presented the medals in Seattle Washington authorized by the Secretary of Transportation.
Don Johnson, regional planning manager with Weyerhaeuser, was named general campaign chairman for the 1973-74 United Way drive in Southwestern Oregon. A North Bend resident with his wife Judy and two children, Johnson served in the Air Force before joining Weyerhaeuser and has volunteered with United Way since 1968, including a 1971 stint as vice-chairman. He aims to engage nonmembers and assess needs to set a realistic goal.
Two Coquille men were hospitalized after a night plane crashed upside down near the Norway airfield. Pilot Eugene R. Wisby age 58 suffered a broken collar bone and severe head cuts while passenger Lloyd L. Gordon age 29 sustained chest and shoulder injuries. Witnesses said the aircraft dipped low and snagged a power line 130 yards from the runway.
The Red Cross Bloodmobile will visit Myrtle Point on February 27 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Myrtle Crest Gym with a 75 donor quota. Local residents Chet Zumwalt and Oliver still need blood replacements. for donations call Connie Detlefsen or Curt Beckham.
Country singer Tide Cartwright performed at the Oregon State Penitentiary in Salem last Monday. He appeared with his brother Al and 13 other artists on a two hour program taped for KGAY radio. The show was arranged by Walt Hogan Doc Versteg and Keeney and featured a poster given to the inmates. Cartwright and Al head to Bakersfield for a recording session with Don Rich at Buck Owens Studio next week.
The AFS International announces a dinner for Thursday March 8 at 7 p.m. in the Coquille Community Building. Tickets are priced at 1606 dollars each.
Myrtle Grange 289 marked 75 years with a Sunday program honoring past masters. Oregon State Grange Master Ted Sims attended as guest speaker, joining many state officers and a large local attendance. The event featured a pageant, tributes, music, and a reception with visitors from numerous counties and states.
