Rotary and Saddle Club dinners highlight community spirit

The Mothers March for the Polo Fund drew praise while an apology misses Mrs. McCaffree’s name. Rotary’s Ladies Night featured Rev Duty with twin slide projections, Pat Albertson performed folk songs, and an auto-harp. The Saddle Club dinner followed, with clams chowder fans and a $1000 donation to Camp Easter Seal benefiting handicapped youths. Bruce Whitaker leads Camp Easter Seal, noting therapeutic value and boarding of vacationers. Lt Col. Glenn’s orbit impressed attendees as ex-sailors offered praise.

Bobcats Clinch Second With 59-39 Win Over Brookings

Myrtle Point Bobcats, coached by Jack Orr, clinched second in the Sunset Conference with a 59 to 39 victory over Brookings on Friday. Johnson led MP with 15 points while Keffer scored 13 for Brookings as Myrtle Point pulled away in the final period.

More Hunter Safety Classes Scheduled

Myrtle Point Sportsmen's Club plans another Hunter Safety class starting Tuesday March 6 at the high school. The program uses club volunteers and targets youths aged 10 to 17 who must complete the course before hunting. The first series was well received and extra inquiries prompted the second offering.

Am Roush of Roush Parts Service was named Boss Of The Year by the local Jaycees at a banquet last week. County Commissioner Bob Geaney and Walt Barklow attended as guest speakers on county road issues. Bill Hamilton chaired the banquet committee and Floyd Oyster presided. the dinner was at Angler's Cafe.

State Religious Leader To Lead Methodist Class

Mrs Grace Sayre director of Children's Work for the Methodist church Oregon Conference will visit Myrtle Point on Saturday March 3 to conduct a workshop and observation class for teachers and parents The program begins 930 am in the church includes a sack lunch at noon and ends about 330 pm Mrs Grace Ridley of Portland accompanies Mrs Sayre and will lead the preschool department.

Lady Elk Golfers Choose Officers at March Meeting

The Lady Elk Golfers of Coquille Valley will hold their annual election of officers after a luncheon at the Elks Club next Wednesday March 7. President Lucille Otter notes the nominating committee will present one candidate from Coquille for each office and Myrtle Point member Grace Stemmler is secretary-treasurer. Members are urged to attend both luncheon and meeting.

Juanita Griffin Lands TV Contract in Portland

Juanita Griffin of Portland signed a contract Friday to play a minor role in a television series with filming planned near Portland. A Myrtle Point High School 1960 graduate, she works in an Portland insurance office and does modeling. She trained at Gloria LaVerne Modeling School and was named Oregon Journal's Pretty Girl of the Week recently.

Beta Sigma Phi aims to form Nu Phi Mu chapter in Myrtle Point

Inter-Chapter members plan a new Nu Phi Mu chapter in Myrtle Point for four women aged 17 to 22. A social hour is set tonight at 8 p.m. at the Myrtle Point Kindergarten. Interested young women should contact Mrs. Gus Sanford or Mrs. Tom Ken.

Advisory Committee Planned by Local TV Installer

Bob Cowart manager of TV Systems proposed a Citizens Advisory Committee to aid city and school officials. The group would study local problems, assist in disseminating information, and help with volunteer projects. Council supported the concept and aims to be functional in weeks. a street improvement loop project was also approved for this season's program.

The Powers School District budget for the coming fiscal year is set at 280295 dollars and will be shown this week and next. A school meeting is planned for 8 p.m. to discuss the budget with the school board and budget committee members answering questions from citizens.

The County Fair Board discussed expanding the 4 H and FFA building to 108 by 150 feet on newly acquired land and remodeling the old stock hall for floral exhibits. Construction to start by March 1 and finish within 60 days.
