The Myrtle Point Herald notes a chaotic outing with Lang Leneve the outdoors writer as the group juggles fishing attempts and a public Rotary installation. The piece mocks anchor mishaps and miscommunications among local officials while praising Leneve's company and book.
Myrtle Point business district will close Monday July 3 as the chamber of commerce votes a three day weekend. Most feed stores, restaurants, service stations and drug stores will stay open while the balance closes. Mayor Pinkley urges all viable businesses to observe the holiday.
The Summer Recreation program led by Terry Shore moves into high gear with swimming classes full and swimming at Coquille Pool from Maple Primary at 8 30 9 30 and 10 30 am starting Monday. Beginning July 10 the high school gym hosts basketball on Monday and Wednesday nights 7 38 to 8 30 pm. A Babe Ruth league for 13 to 18 year olds will meet at Myrtle Crest Junior High Friday at 1 30 pm. Parents urged to check closets for Pee wee uniforms. overdue uniforms may keep players from games. The Squaw Lake salvage timber sale on the Passis Ranger District of Siskiyou National Forest closed June 21 1961 with Wesley Morgan of Agness Oregon as high bidder at 1439750 dollars for a 12 acre area containing about 5 million board feet. Frye Brothers Logging Co of Powers Oregon also bid. Estimated volumes and bids include Douglas fir 329 million board feet appraised 28.44 bid 39.90 and Orford cedar 60 million board feet appraised at 27.25 with bids 27.25. western hemlock and other species 50 million board feet appraised at 56.3 bid 9.85.
George Holloway of Remote suffered severe lacerations to one hand last week when he tried to separate his large dog from a small one. The bite tore flesh from the back of his hand, requiring 34 stitches to close the wounds.
Hardy Mast of Mythie Point died Tuesday night at age 88. Funeral services are planned for Friday at Schroder Brothers Chapel with arrangements pending at Herald press time.
A new Baptist church on Lene advances toward completion with an L shaped plan 106 by 120 feet offering about 7000 square feet. Built by Rev Fenderson and volunteers, the project targets a September use date and 200 seat chapel with education and social wings. Broadway Bonds of 25000 dollars will fund the project at 6 percent interest.
The 3rd annual Coos County Fat Lamb and Feeder sale is scheduled for July 1 1961 at the Coos County fair grounds Myrtle Point. Over 2000 head of lambs are expected with sale time at 2 30 p m. Lambs will be sexed graded and weighed. The Livestock association reduced selling cost per head from 20c to 10c due to past sale success and grower support.
Erv Dettman rallied from a four down deficit after the first round to beat Jack McClarrin in the Coquille Valley Golf and Country Club championship match. Dettman won on the 18th hole after a late comeback and a miscued shot by McClarrin, with a crowd cheering the decisive finish.
The Davis local Rotary Club announces new leadership with Ren Readiett and Dea Whaedgeer named to the board of directors along with new secretary and treasurer roles.
Cheryl Guerin and Jackie Francie of Myrtle Point enter the Miss Coos County contest at the school auditorium Friday night. Guerin, a 1961 graduate daughter of Mr and Mrs Tom Guerin, plans Oregon State University study with a dramatic reading talent and a background in piano dancing and acting. Both girls compete with four from Coos Bay and three from North Bend for the county title and state entry.
Mrs Agnes E Estelle of Myrtle Point withdrew a $37855.50 damage suit against the city after an undisclosed settlement was announced in Judge Kings court. The action, over fumes from the sewer plant, had jurors seated and a trial scheduled. Another related suit by the Estelle couple awaits possible settlement.
Reverend Durman Love is appointed pastor to succeed Rev Mutten who retires after fifty years in ministry. He will preach this Sunday. Love comes from Zion Church of Christ in Dexter Oregon and is a World War I veteran who served three years in the army. He grew up in Molalla Oregon and joined the local Christian church there.
