Funeral services for Myrtle Point resident Mrs Josephine C Moore were held at Schrotder Brothers chapel with Rev Marshall Faulk presiding. Interment followed at Norway Cemetery. Born in 1895 in Kansas, she lived in Myrtle Point since 1937 and resided at 305th Street in 1940. She belonged to the Methodist Church, Myrtle Point Business and Professional Women's Club, and Rebekah Lodge No. 120.
In a low turnout special election the county rejected a 3-year serial levy of about 91 million dollars. The proposal, supported by county commissioners, drew 1,884 votes for and 1,874 against from roughly 3,800 total cast among an eligible 2 percent turnout.
Postmaster Schroeder announced Civil Service examination for Clerk Carrier jobs at Myrtle Point Post Office. Applications must be received by July 1 1961. postmarked after midnight July 1 will be rejected. US citizens 18 or older residing in the Myrtle Point delivery area eligible. Pay starts at 216 per hour with automatic increases to 263 per hour.
The Myrtle Point city council voted to keep parking meters on the streets, rejecting a petition to remove them. The decision followed a chamber of commerce stance against removal and a comparison with Gold Beach where meters were removed. The panel also approved buying a 1.5 ton street roller for 1475 dollars and confirmed Rey Rebineca to the Planning Commission to replace Ralph Crane.
Mrs Harland Montgomery oversees a Mobile X ray Unit at Myrtle Point where 317 X rays were taken. Volunteers led by Mrs B Z Reme and assisted by many, including Dr N D Rankin and nurses, organized the drive and will mail reports within two weeks. Local power firm provided electrical hookup and the effort emphasized community cooperation.
The Myrtle Point summer recreation program launches with Pee-wee baseball and swimming sign ups at Maple Primary on June 28. New director Terry Shore of Eugene, chosen by the city commission, plans tennis and basketball schedules later. Bill Roush says the committee expects a productive season for local youth despite a brief start delay.
