Coos County extension office will distribute cinnabar moth larvae as a biological control for tansy ragwort. Landowners must request releases by July 15, with applications handled at the county extension office in the Courthouse at Coquille or by phone.
William McLean has been elected president of the South Coast Chapter of the Mental Health Association for two years by a 30 member board. He also serves on the state Mental Health Association of Oregon board and chairs Marshfield High School's social studies department.
Myrtle Point Lions Club schedules its annual White Elephant Sale for July 15 at 10 a.m. at the Myrtle Point Fire Hall. Proceeds support eye classes for local residents as part of the sight conservation program. Call Leo Schmidt or Bill Little or Joe Martinks with items to donate.
Registration blanks for the Coquille valley session at Camp Humdiger are available at The Sentinel. The 10 day program runs July 17 to July 26 serving Coquille Bandon Myrtle Point and Powers. Open to children ages 7 to 14 from low income families per federal priority guidelines. Physicals on first day by Coos County health department. Lunch should be given before rides on July 17. The City of Myrtle Point outlines its planned use of Federal Revenue Sharing Funds for July 1 1974 to June 30 1975. Allocations include public safety 3000 dollars public transportation 26597 dollars recreation 780 dollars libraries 2500 dollars and financial administration 3420 dollars.
The 1974 75 Myrtle Point budget received voter approval with 134 yes and 25 no. The approved levy of 209 608 exceeds the six per cent cap by 96 063 and is 41 000 lower than the defeated prior proposal. Coos County sheep producers sold over 1 100 lambs in the first lamb pool on June 12, with Myrtle Point contributing nearly 500 feeder lambs and one 600 fat lambs. Fat lambs averaged 90 pounds at 45 cents per pound and feeders about 75 pounds at 37 cents per pound.
The Concerned Citizens of Myrtle Point held their first general meeting at Myrtle Point High School. Les Walker was elected chairman with Dan Wooley as vice chair, Paula Miller secretary, and Homer Robinson treasurer. Committees include Education Doug Sinko Civic Marsha Stilets Program Homer Robinson Student Rod Boone and Public Relations Opal Davis. A July 23 meeting at 7 30 pm is planned. projects include a Teen Center and Employment Referral Service.
Port Orford plans a full Independence Day with the Chauvinist Pig Band headlining the Jetty Juhiles. The 12 events include a Jubilee Parade at 1 a.m. led by Cape Blanco Coast Guard color guard, bands, floats, and five prize categories with first place 16 dollars and second place 10 dollars. Activities run from 8 a.m. pancake breakfast to evening pageant, square dancing, fish fry, and a grand firework display, sponsored by the chamber of commerce with free viewing along Highway 101 and Battle Rock State Park.
