In these days of various artificial heats such as basements furnaces oils and kerosene heaters the old reliable wood fire seems scarce yet still cherished by many. The author recalls cheerful crackling and the pungent odor of burning fir and laments the loss as modern stoves take over. Continues on Page Three.

Myrtle Point city council schedules a budget hearing on Thursday July 2 at 8 p m in city hall to discuss the 1953 54 proposed budget. A subsequent election to exceed the 6 percent tax limit will be held Monday July 6 with polls open 8 a m to 8 p m for all voters.
Rep Errett Scrivner Kansas cites President Eisenhowers military expertise to defend proposed reductions in the air force and military budget. He says the President believes cuts will not weaken national security and expresses trust in his judgment until others match his military record.
The 33rd Myrtle convention of the county camps of the Royal Neighbors of America opened in Powers at the gymnasium. Officers from Portland Coquille and Powers attended. The event included initiation of new members, ritual work, a banquet, and a large program with many local guests.
Mrs Tom Hazen of Myrtle Point won first prize in a hot guessing contest run by Marshfield Fuel and Supply Co Harold E Beleretty manager. She was notified Monday morning that the prize was a sewing machine valued at 205 dollars.
The Myrtle Point City Council accepted Atlas Construction Co of Portland for the sewage disposal plant and interceptor system at 141574.80, the lowest bid. E L Wiggins Construction Co and H C Werner bids were higher. Funding comes from a 100000 bond issue and a 25000 reserve fund begun in 1942. Construction start date not yet announced.
Harold J Rauch of Myrtle Point owner of Rauch Timber Co died of lung cancer Tuesday in Seattle. He operated a Coos County sawmill, served in WWI with the 20th Engineers, and is survived by wife Margaret and sisters in Seattle. Funeral was held at Mountain View chapel Tacoma with six nephews as pallbearers.
More than 2000 delegates gathered in Colorado Springs for the Church of the Brethren’s 167th annual conference opening sessions. Myrtle Point attendees included Rev. and Mrs. Robert Sink and Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Stevens.
Postmaster Milton Schroeder announces a 50 percent increase in post office box rentals, effective this quarter. Small boxes rise from 60 cents to 90 cents for three months, next size from 75 to 110 cents, and large boxes from 100 to 150 cents.
Harris Ellsworth notes 78 out of town visitors signed the office guest book in Washington. He recalls friendly chats with travelers from home, counting names and enjoying the homecoming impression.
The city of Myrtle Point endured a bombing scare Sunday afternoon as about 16 aircraft buzzed over the tree tops dropping propaganda leaflets that warned this could have been a bomb. The leaflets invited citizens to join Civilian Defense and listed contact names led by General Director Johanes and Frank Mery with the City Recorder at Powers.
Myrtle Point Lions club installed new officers at a dinner meeting last Wednesday. Ed Sempert, newly elected president, was absent in Portland. Ralph Whitaker performed the installation. Officers pledged to serve include Frank Meldrum, Ritchie Francis, Don Driscoll, Al Wyld, Chet Weedy, John Vannice, Ben Daniels.
Emma Louise Webster is appointed Coos County home extension agent in home economics, effective July 3. The announcement by F. Lewallard notes Webster’s background, including three years of prior service and training at a former college, with details on her previous work in Washington and years of experience.
Voters overwhelmingly favored exceeding the 6% cap to raise 858,402.53 for Union High School District No.2 for the 1983 84 school year. The budget required 108,065.00 to balance with 49,662.47 available under the limit. The tally was 164 Yes 38 No and Bob Powrie wins a seat on the school board.
The BLM warns unpatented mining claim holders on federally owned lands in Oregon Idaho and Washington that $100 worth of assessment work must be completed each year and proof filed by noon July 1. Noncompliant claims may be subjected to adverse relocation with affidavits due if work is ongoing and a sworn statement is needed for O and C lands Swan Island Portland 18.
Public installation ceremonies for the Order of Rainbow Girls at the Masonic hall named Beverly Gasner as Worthy Advisor. A full slate of officers and choir members were installed for the summer term with Lois Tobey and Arlene Aasen among the installing officers.
The Coos county Non High School Board met in the county school superintendent office on June 18 to count ballots. Official results show Clyde Deal of Empire and Son II winning seats, with the tally including only the current vote.
A single boy was seriously injured when a truck struck a pickup while traveling on a coast highway near Meade. The child, about ten years old, suffered leg injuries and was taken to Mast Pass hospital. Other children in the area were uninjured.
The Chamber finished installing six new cans in downtown, with one at Ritchie Service Station at 7th and Spruce, one at Hilend Theatre on 6th Street, and two more at the Chamber corner. The cans are praised for beauty and utility in keeping paper and debris off the streets.
