A ranching reminiscence recounts a nighttime cougar encounter after dogs treed a coon. Henry Schroeder narrates a cousin Ralph and his chase as a cougar leapt from a swaying tree and vanished into darkness, pursued by dogs across fields and drainage ditches.
The editorial defends President Syngman Rhee for freeing about 27 000 Korean prisoners of war, arguing he acted to liberate Koreans who opposed Communism and fought for South Korea. It condemns timing and pressure from the United Nations while praising Rhee's resolve.

The home of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest J. Schneider of Iilahe Oregon was destroyed by fire last Thursday. Cause unknown though a wood range spark may have ignited a rug. The blaze ruined the house and a nearby guest cabin. The Schneiders, longtime local figures, plan to rebuild on a small scale.
Southern Coos county attendees from Myrtle Point join the Vet erans of Foreign Wars and ladies auxiliary at The Dalles Oregon for a four day convention June 24 to 27. Win ngham district commander and Mrs Winningham district auxiliary president led Coquille chapter and delegate roles. The Myrtle Point auxiliary sent Mrs Brown as delegate and page. The next Department encampment is set for Bend July 5 to 8 1954. Parsons will report at the next local post meeting.
The Coos Bay Forest District of the BLM sold 122,079,000 board feet of timber in the year ending June 25 1953 valued at $2,339,675.55 District Forester Ross A Youngblood reports monthly sales with the peak in September 1953 at 38,545 thousand board feet and the low in February 1953 at 1,045 thousand board feet.
Two registered Jersey cows owned by W. R. Davenport of Myrtle Point Oregon received special recognition for outstanding production records. Flossy Eagle Boy Brownie yielded 12 190 pounds of milk and 306 days butterfat at seven years, while Rinda Eagle KX 2 mon Petia teats screen supervision at Oregon State College for The American Jersey Cattle Club in Columbus Ohio.
Mr and Mrs Herman Tedsen and Mr and Mrs Martin Schmidt depart Seattle for a three month European tour. The journey starts with a train to New York then flight to Glasgow and Hamburg, then on to Husum for its 350th anniversary and continues through Germany Austria Switzerland Italy England France Belgium Holland Denmark Norway and Sweden. They return to the United States around September 1 with ten stops including a week in Washington DC.
Invitations to Myrtle Point High School's Class of 1928 invite members and families to a Silver Anniversary Picnic at Oak Grove on the fair grounds Sunday July 12. A 1 p.m. potluck meal will include coffee sugar and cream furnished on the grounds. Officers John Gearhart and Jean Davenport urge members to attend and contact Mitch Myers for details.
Steven Goddard shows signs of recovery after four skin graft operations following severe burns from an explosion at a school behind the building on Friday April 3. Supt G B Goddard reported the patient is progressing well and faces a hopeful full recovery.
River Road residents praise Myrtle Point city council for installing three lights along the road to illuminate dangerous turns. Lilas Eliy told a Herald reporter the lighting makes the area feel like living in town.
Robert Gurney four years old son of Mr and Mrs Myron Gurney of McKinley was killed Saturday morning when struck by a tractor driven by Milford Mast who was building a rons on his ranch The child was playing with new cups and dies at hospital Survivors include a brother and two brothers in the navy a sister Mrs Barnett Sumner and grandparents Mrs Mamie C and Mr and Mrs Geecee no Te all of Coos Bay
The Elgin chapter recognized members including W. Mo, Eommpert, and Mrs. Stetanier during a Friday night gathering. Also noted were Mrs. Ray Collier West Semipert and alternate Chas. Wagner.
A public hearing by the Oregon Milk Marketing Administration is set for 10 am on July 8 1953 at the Eagles hall Coos Bay to review changes in marketing areas under the act. The meeting will cover amendments authorizing larger regional areas and other measures to improve administration with Thos L Ohlsen and Roy Beltz assisting.
Washington dispatch reports Harris Ellsworth says House action reduces the Truman budget by more than 25 percent with $5 billion shaved from total appropriations. If Defense and Mutual Security are not cut further the budget could drop by $10 to $12 billion, affecting Veterans Administration funding and medical care.
Roger W Babson says administration money managers reversed policy fast, expanding money supply by up to six billion dollars to counter a prior error. He warns this signals no long term change, just emergency action with likely short term boosts to bonds stocks and commodities and easing credit for individuals and business.
