The Coos County Livestock Association held its Second Annual Tour with about 70 vehicles forming a caravan through Southern Coos County. Guerin Hereford stock ranch near Myrtle Point at 9:30 a.m. committee head Sames Myrtle Point directed programs while Extension Agent Jack Thines explained trial plots showing nitrogen fertilization and brush control.
The First Presbyterian Church plans to open a boys and girls camp at McKinley this Sunday afternoon June 21. A church truck will depart at 3:00 p m transporting bedding suitcases and supplies to the camp followed by a car procession. Registration costs 12 and is payable at Schroeder's in Myrtle Point. Campers should bring two blankets pillows towels toiletries flashlights swimsuits hiking clothes Bible notebooks and small change for candy or cards home. The camp closes at noon on Sunday the 28th with grounds to be cleaned by 3 p m. Miss Mary is noted in the camp notice.
Ashland June 8 Oregon College of Education held commencement for the largest class in school history with 227 bachelor’s degrees 108 three year graduates and 7 two year Liberal Arts certificates totaling 342. Chancellor Byrne opened the ceremony and Dr Roben J Masske USC praised three 50-year anniversary honorees including Robert Burnett of Eugene 1888 graduate.
Beta Sigma Phi will sponsor the annual cancer fund drive in Myrtle Point with committee head Mrs. Norman Jarvis announcing letters are mailed to residents detailing the National Cancer Society work. Guest speaker Mrs. Clara Siegley, state representative of the American Cancer Society, lectured and showed two educational moving pictures on the disease and efforts to overcome it.
Voters in the Union High District will cast ballots Monday June 22 from 2 to 8 pm at the high school for a five year term board member and to approve exceeding the 6 percent budget limit. Petitions name Paul E Breuer and Robert E Powrie as director candidates.
The Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce urges civic organizations to form work parties to finish the 4 H dormitory at the fair grounds before the August 13 fair. Maurits Jalo will supervise and welcomes donated labor, weekends included. The chamber also plans a Plonner Queen contest to fund Myrtle Point's Community Band, with details to follow.
The Myrtle Point Daily Vacation Bible School closed Friday June 12 in the First Methodist church with a packed audience. Mrs. Theodore Smith presided as general superintendent and Miss Mary Jo Schroeder gave the opening prayer. Pupils in each department presented missionary offerings totaling 102 dollars. A joint safety meeting of the Oregon Timber Workers OTTO and Southern Oregon Truckers Association is set for Friday June 19 at Geo Burr's hall. A review of recent state legislation affecting logging and trucking will be presented by Jack Curtis OTTO and Estelle of the truckers.
