Antique Car Show Set in Myrtle Point This Saturday

The Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce hosts the eighth annual Antique Car Show this Saturday. Entries display from 10 to 11 a.m. on Spruce Street between Fourth and Sixth, with traffic closed. Al Cartwright chairs the event with Lew Heimbigner and Dean Mason assisting for registrations, Pete Peterson overseeing the Spruce Street hill climb at 2 p.m., and a noon luncheon at the Colony Restaurant for entrants and guests. Albers Milling Co. pancake feed and Peat Oden and his country band will entertain during the day.

Sawdust Theatre Prepares for Another Smashing Summer Show

Post Office to become Postal Service on July 1

Myrtle Point marks changeover to Postal Service Corporation with an all day open house at the Myrtle Point post office. Postmaster Milton Schroeder invites the public to observe operations, enjoy light refreshments, and receive free envelopes and a first day cover stamp cancellation.

Coos County Fair to Crown Queen This Weekend

The 1971 Coos County Fair queen contest is set for Friday and Saturday at Myrtle Point fairgrounds as part of the Sheriff's Posse Rodeo. Eliminations begin Friday night with six finalists doing a two minute speech on Saturday after a breakfast with the judge, leading to a queen and two princesses being crowned Saturday night.

Oregon Coast Association to Host Sign Bill Seminar

The Oregon Coast Association will sponsor a seminar on House Bill 1861 known as the Highway Sign Bill during their June 28 Quarterly Board Meeting at Surfsides Lincoln City. A panel of legislators and E. E. Beckman will discuss regulations and sign fate with a luncheon, inviting reservations via local chambers or by writing to Newport Oregon.

Forest supervisor Bill Ronyone reports approval of boundary adjustments across all five Siskiyou Ranger Districts affecting 1,088,500 acres. GP announces expansion and timber shift at Coquille and Samoa plants

Georgia Pacific plans to convert Coquille Oregon and Samoa Northern California plywood plants to respond to growing regenerating timber. The move boosts particleboard output and adds nearly 200 million square feet of capacity this year while completing plant modernizations by year end.

GP officials described ongoing modernization to Samoa and Coquille plants including high speed lathes for veneers and log steaming vats. The program aims to cut unit costs, shift to timber regeneration, and reduce third shift needs while offsetting sanded capacity declines with new growth timber from other regions. Local employment may fall at both sites as operations become more efficient.

Forest fire season begins for Coos district zones 3A 11

Effective today at 12901 the forest fire season starts in zones 3A and 11 of the Coos Forest Protective Association. Open burning will need a permit and logging operators must have fire tools at landings. Coastal zones 1A and 128A will delay permits. Call any Coos Forest Protective Association office to obtain permits.

Coast Guard Station Turned Over to OSU for Research

A former Coast Guard station at Port Orford near Oregon State University was officially transferred to OSU for educational programs after years of use under a five year license. The site houses a Pacific Fisheries Laboratory research program led by Dr. William J. McNeil focusing on salmon acclimation, reef studies, and aquatic species experiments in a remodeled boat house.
