North Bend Man Wins Top Honor in Myrtle Point Antique Car Show
Dr. Carl Edd of North Bend exhibited a restored 1989 Model A Town Sedan and captured the stakes trophy at the annual Antique Car Show in Myrtle Point last Saturday. Winners included Leroy Robinson and Boop Barrows among pre 1915 and 1916 to 1985 models, with hill climbing honors going to Marvin McLarty Jim Peart Gary Albertson and others.

City outlines water pipe expansion and traffic signal project
City crews will lay about 990 feet of pipe per day at a cost of 60 to 70 cents per foot. Plans call for 11 000 feet this year and 13 000 feet next year to finish a dual water system. A new four way traffic signal at Eighth and Morris was awarded to Manson Electric Co. by the State Highway Division. Deadline for completion is shortly after July 1. Residential street lighting will be increased threefold. Myrtle Point’s fire insurance rating may improve as a result.

Counselors Named for 4 H Camp Myrtlewood Learn and Serve

GP trims Coquille workforce amid shift change plan
GP reduced its Coquille plant workforce by 84 last weekend, on top of 30 already laid off, with a further 50 to be cut by next week. The company says modernization will allow two shifts instead of three as high speed lathes and timber-type machinery come online, with more adjustments anticipated over coming months.
Local timber sale results and upcoming BLM auction
Three timber parcels in Coos County sold at the June 25 BLM sale at appraised prices. Rock Creek sold 17,266,000 board feet for 962,568.65 to Menasha Corp of North Bend. Indian Creek Ko 3 went to Coos Mead Timber Co of Coos Bay for 660,008.96. Worth Bandy sale of 10,548,008 board feet brought 898,081.96 to Murphy Vouser Co of Myrtle Point. The next sale is July 16, 1971 at the Coos Bay district office. Over 800 fat lambs and 36 feeder lambs were sold from Myrtle Point June 23. Fat lambs brought 9.29 per cwt, feeders 6.86. pool averages 98.3 pounds for lambs and 73.8 pounds for feeders.

Drivers led by Egli win eliminations at Albany Timber Carnival
Egli, a Haley & Haley Trucking driver from Myrtle Palm, led the field in eliminations at the Albany Timber Carnival truck driving contest held at Pony Village North Bend. He scored 36 points to earn a berth in the Albany event, with four other drivers qualifying for Coos County Fair in August. Deany Miles finished fifth and is an alternate for the Coos County Fair. Bank debits across 10 reporting banks rose in May 1971 to 46,516,000 with Oregon’s 366 banks showing a 10.3 percent drop from April 1971 and a 10.9 percent rise from May 1970. Total May 1971 debits were 6,052,734,000.

Oregon farm workers must be covered by workmen s compensation insurance by July under a legislative change. M Keith Wilson chairman of the Workmen s Compensation Board said the major change eliminates the previous exemption for employers with payroll under 1500 dollars in the prior year.
