Gov Straub to Visit Coos County for Town Hall Tour

Governor Bob Straub announced a June 24 to 26 visit to Southern Oregon for a series of state of the public town hall meetings. The swing will cover North Bend Coos Bay Coquille Medford Ashland and Roseburg with official meetings in Coquille 2:30 to 4 p.m. and a 6 p.m. dinner in North Bend followed by an 8:30 p.m. town hall at the Coos Bay Library Auditorium.

Orientation meetings slated at SWOCC

Prospective fall term students at Southwestern Oregon Community College may plan class schedules and register this summer. Fifteen two hour sessions are set July through September with morning and afternoon slots and a limit of 18 students per session. Sessions require prior placement tests and advance sign up by calling the Office of Student Services.

Myrtle Point Votes Down Mobile Home Clause in Ordinance

Voters rejected Ordinance 932 in a special referendum, leading the City Council to delete the mobile home clause from the new ordinance and adopt a revised version. The council also discussed filling the city administrator post with two applicants, Lew Cook and Lee Walters. A 4-3 vote defeated a motion to ban smoking at council meetings, with Mayor Wilberger breaking a tie.

Fair queen crowned for 1975 in Coos County

Kelly Walton of Coos Bay was crowned 1975 Coos County Fair queen at the grounds last Saturday night. She is an 18 year old Marshfield High School graduate and daughter of Mr. and Mrs Jack Walton. Dena Fry of North Bend was first runner up and Mellah Vahoomani of Coos Bay was second runner up.

Fire season restrictions expand across Oregon

State Forester E. Schroeder announces fire season restrictions now covering Northwest and Northeast Oregon and coastal areas. Burning permits are required and forest workers must have fire equipment at active sites. Drier spring conditions, higher east winds, and reduced cloud cover raise fire danger with nearly 20 fires already reported statewide.

Reading program honors at Myrtle Point schools ceremony

Myrtle Lodge No. 78 ALF and A M presented achievement certificates to the Myrtle Point special reading staff for upgrading the district reading program. District Supt Gerald Bennett and Jimmie King introduced staff and outlined teaching methods, tutoring, and use of Title 1 funds.

Former Myrtle Point publisher dies in highway crash

Agnes Weeden Stephens 80 of Port Angeles died in a two vehicle collision four miles east of Myrtle Point on Highway 42 Tuesday afternoon. Her auto crossed the center line and struck a loaded log truck driven by Clarence Wagner 30 of Coquille. Passenger Nels Thorsen 69 also of Port Angeles suffered cuts and bruises. Wagner was uninjured. Police said no citation was issued.

Myrtle Point zoning ordinance rejected by 1975 vote

Proclamation by Mayor Ervin R. Wilberger states that Ordinance No. 932 establishing zoning regulations in Myrtle Point was rejected in a June 10 1975 special election with 110 votes for approval and 121 for rejection. The ordinance was repealed and shall cease to be in effect.
