Large Sitkum Douglas Fir noted on steep slope near Sitkum

A large Sitkum Douglas Fir, discovered on a 70 percent slope near Sitkum, sits within a 0.25 acre Mg grove set aside from timber harvest. Robert L. Foisy of Burnt Mountain, district manager, says the site is near Coos Bay Wagon Road and Dead Horse Creek Road at about 2000 feet elevation. Edward G. Saunter of the Coos Bay District notes the site supports stands on BLM managed lands as part of the Cherry Seekhaere Waterfall Area program.

Whitaker to Head Nations Association Prominent Easter Seal Leader

Bruce Whitaker has been elected president of the National Eastern Seal Executives Association, representing executive directors of Easter Seal Societies in the United States and Puerto Rico. A Myrtle Point native and graduate of Oregon State University, he became executive director of the Oregon Easter Seal Society in 1974 after relocating from San Francisco.

Rotary honors Ernie Clausen in Myrtle Potat meet

Ernie Clausen longtime Myrtle Potat Rotary Club member was honored by Rotarians at the Colony Restaurant last Thursday. Wallace Dement praised Clausen as someone who placed service above self and sketched his life from birth in Germany to immigration in 1904, dairy farming in Montana and California, leading Broadbend Cheese Factory, community service in Coos County, and a long banking and church involvement.
