Highway crew honored for accident-free six months

District 7 maintenance crew foremen in Coos and Curry Counties were treated to a luncheon in Coquille on May 31 after operating Star Highway Division equipment for 358 300 miles with no vehicle accidents. Regional engineer J H Versteeg praised District Engineer Robert Sandmaan and crew for exemplary driving through nose and defensive practices and positive attitudes. Guest Berrell Babb, recently retired Port Orford Section foreman, attended.

Placement tests set for entering freshmen at Southwestern Oregon CC

Southwestern Oregon Community College will require all entering freshmen planning degree or certificate programs to take placement tests in English, reading, and mathematics. Tests are scheduled summer and fall terms at Dellwood Hall and Colledo 3 with several times offered. students should contact the Office of Student Services at 800-9834 ext. 236 for special arrangements.

County Fair queen to be crowned at Coos County fair

The Coos County Fair queen for 1972 will be crowned Saturday night at the Queen's Ball in Myrtle Point as part of the three day Sheriff's Posse Rodeo and Fair. Six finalists will advance from horsemanship and speech contests to represent the fair, with Roda Laird of 1971 crowning the new queen.

Ross to lead Oregon Coastal Conservation and Development Commission

James F. Ross aged 31 has been hired as executive director of the Oregon Coastal Conservation and Development Commission and is set to take over July 1. A former executive director of the Marion Polk County Boundary Commission, Ross emphasizes coastal input in policy making and notes beaches belong to all Oregon citizens. He stresses coastal residents must be included in planning decisions that affect their communities.

Jim Howe to fill city post

James B R Howe will become Myrtle Point's new city administrator on July 1. He runs City Heating Oil Co. and will serve part time at city hall 9 a.m. to 12 noon weekdays, vacating his city council seat after taking the post. He succeeds Ben Nichols who resigned to join Bank of Myrtle Point as assistant cashier after 18 years in the administrator role.

Dunns Buy Ru-Be Cafe in Myrtle Point

Mr and Mrs James Dunn formerly of Portland become the new owners of the Ru-Be Cafe in Myrtle Point. Dunn and his wife Hen and daughter Debra will run the restaurant, continuing 34 hour food service with prior experience in the business.

Yvonne Waterman Wins Georgia Pacific Scholarship

Yvonne Waterman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Waterman of Myrtle Point, received a four year Georgia Pacific scholarship. Ambrose Caudle presented the award to Yvonne at a Myrtle Point Rotary Club meeting. She is a Myrtle Point High School Class of 1978 valedictorian with a 3.97 GPA and active in NIMS Quill and Scroll Franco-German Club and Girls Ath Dem.
