Epperson Elected by Trackers in Coos Curry Chapter

Fire season begins in zones of Cox Forest Protective Association

Effective at 1210 a.m. Wednesday June 21 the official forest fire season starts in zones 1 24 and 11 of the Cox Forest Protective Association district. After this date open burning requires a permit and logging operators must have fire tools at landings. Zone 12A coastal area is exempt until a later date. Burning permits are available by calling any Cox Forest Protective Association office. Plan calls well in advance for inspections.

Rosemary Edwards of Broadvent an 110 year old Myrtle Point graduate was crowned 1972 Coos County Fair queen at the mounted posse rodeo and coronation ball in Myrtle Point. Sandy Easley and Cheryl Steward joined her on the fair court.

Polio threat looms for Oregon youths

Dr. Edward Press, Oregon public health officer, warns polio could strike many children this summer due to only about 50 percent immunization. Surveys in 10 counties show average immunity at 50 percent, with 23 to 64 percent in various areas, urging early vaccination and booster doses before school entry. Oregon has had no polio cases since 1965, but officials warn complacency risks an outbreak if the virus is introduced.

Myrtle Crest Principal Paul Franzen reports 34 coats and jackets 1 sweater and 16 shirts sweatshirts were left at the school by students at the end of the 1971 72 year. The school will hold a week for students to claim the clothing.

Myrtle Point Chamber approves parade float and travel funds

The Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce votes to spend 100 for a parade float in the Coos County Fair Parade in August. The float will honor this year’s theme Family Affair and be built by Xi Alpha Nu Sorority. The chamber also approves 75 for Jim Mast’s South African Cultural Exchange wrestling trip and 2980 for Dick Defoto’s trip to national championships next month.

The Coos County Health Department announced the immunizations clinic will close for the summer months and resume operations in September.
