Beaver Boys in Salem Friday

Four Myrtle Point youths Paul Daniels Richard Gassman Bill Brodie and Bob Ruse depart Sunday for Beaver Boys State at Oregon State University. They will join other senior class members for a week of government training with Governor Mark Hatfield and notable speakers. Friday in Salem they elect their state officers. Sponsors include the American Legion Post Rotary Club Tiones Club and Security Rank.

Agness Fete Marks First Power Line Arrival in Rogue River area

About 1500 residents attended a celebration in Agness as electricity reached the last frontier of southwestern Oregon. Ivan Laird spoke for the Coos Curry Electric cooperative while demonstrations showcased new power infrastructure and related events. A helicopter set a power pole, a boat race winner was crowned, axe throwing and parachute delays entertained the crowd, and Barbara Jackson was named Agness queen. The community also noted a local death and travel changes as residents visited relatives in Sitkum.

Golf Handicap Tournament Finals Set at Coquille Valley

Finals approach in the Coquille Valley Golf and Country Club spring handicap event feature Mrs Jake Otter vs Mrs Ralph Whitaker in the ladies championship flight while Mrs Bert Gould meets Mrs Herbert Shepherd for top honors. In the second flight, Mrs Roy Stern faces Mrs Tony Milosevich as underdogs lead the men's division after eliminations.

Summer Fun Program Begins at Coquille Valley Golf Course

Summer Fun Program opens with baseball for ages 9 11 12 13 14 15 and bucketball on Monday nights. City to run two weeks of July swimming trips by bus to Coquille for lessons. Golf upgrades underway with new putting green and T off spots funded by a $25 000 winter system. Myrtlewood scenery highlighted as part of outdoor recreation.

Free Train Ride and Centennial Fest at Myrtle Point

Myrtle Point marks its hundredth birthday with a day of events led by the Jaycees. Free train rides leave at 10 am and 2 pm for Powers, with an estimated hour each way and a 30 minute return stop. Beards and whiskers contest judged at 11 am, and a community fair and other activities fill the day.

Dr. Harry L. Dillin of Linfield College urged graduates to defend freedom and act for a better world. Valedictorian Diane Dement and salutatorian Diana Powrie led awards including $175 PTA prize to Peggy Davenport and multiple full or partial scholarships to Northwest Nazarene, Oregon State, University of Oregon, and other institutions.

Crash Kills Ernest D. Payne

Ernest D. Payne age 24 died after a two door sedan struck a concrete safety island at Highway 101 Hill Street intersection in Bunker Hill. He was prepared to return to his Shoshone Idaho family after four years in the Air Force. He is survived by a wife Elsie three sons and several siblings. Funnel services were held in Nyssa with burial there.

Planging Truck Driver Killed In Elkton Accident

Arthur M Dennison aged 51 of Powers was crushed when a scrap iron truck plunged 40 feet down a bank Friday. His stepson Tom Wiedmann, 15, fractured his pelvis but is said to be recovering. Dennison died instantly per police and is survived by his widow and two younger children.

Two Sisters Named Dairy Princesses in 1962 Contest

Myrtle Mary Ellen Davenport and Peggy Davenport, daughters of Lloyd and Mary Ellen Davenport, were chosen as Dairy princesses for 1962. Both grew up on a 460 acre dairy farm and helped milk 44 Jerseys. Peggy is a sophomore at Oregon State University with a strong 4-H background. Mary Ellen is a Myrtle Point graduate with a decade in 4-H and multiple dairy show honors. The sisters are sponsored by Myrtle Grange while other entrants from Catching Inlet and Coos Bay area are featured.
