The seventh annual Antique Car Show scheduled for June 27 under the Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce may compete for entries with a similar show at the Lloyd Center in Portland. Reported this week that at least 60 entries are expected for the June 26-27 display at the Lloyd Center.
Local soldier PFC Timothy John Brown of Myrtle Point was honored in a June 8, 1970 service at Myrtle Point Chapel. Army caps officiated by Capt John G Seeley, interment at Norway Cemetery, with pallbearers from Ft. Lewis. Survivors include parents Mr and Mrs Williams Brown and brothers. The section also notes Myrtle Point antique car show plans by the Chamber of Commerce with trophies, hill climbing, and a free lunch for entrants.
Jack Dunham announces Les McKay as publicity chairman for the 1970 71 UGN campaign. McKay is general sales manager for Vollstadt Volkse wagen Inc Coos Bay and formerly KCBY TV manager. He moved from Moses Lake Washington four years ago. Dunham, district manager of Pacific Power and Light Co Coos Bay district, says McKay's qualifications ensure strong publicity for Coos County AGN.
A meeting of the Myrtle Point High School Alumni Association is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday in the fire hall. President Mitch Myers invites all interested persons to attend.
The Coos Bay office of the Oregon State Employment Service reports a general slowdown across industries in May with minimal hiring anticipated in summer. Retail plans to hire, but overall hiring down. hospitality steady early May then slows. seafood mixed with shrimp inactive and crab and bottom fish offsetting. Longshoremen hit by Portland dispute. June expected improvement with woodworking and construction teams steady. Unemployment benefits claims rise to 619 in May versus 378 last year. 4,370 weeks claimed. 1,190 active claims at May end.
Public hearing on the city's $334 024 budget for 1970 71 is set for 8 p m next Monday in city hall council chambers. Levy is $81 039 at 7.15 per thousand true cash value reflecting a 3 percent levy reduction. funding from liquor tax franchise tax and carry over. The plan includes 6 percent cost of living increases with Ben Nichols receiving a larger rise for prior abstention. Additional measures cover 24 hour dispatchers for police and fire and capital items including a patrol car and paving costs.
Jim Crabill placed first in the Annual Log Truck Driver contest held Saturday June 6, earning eligibility to compete in the Albany Timber Carnival to be held in July. Other place winners from Myrtle Point include Bud Eghi in third, John Brown in second, and Danny Dement in fourth. They advance to the County Fair.
Registration for city summer recreation programs is set for today and Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at city hall. A 50 cent fee applies to youths in baseball. Regular sign-up starts at 9 a.m. on June 15. Activities include tennis golf soccer track conditioning badminton softball swimming lessons football and youth games. A drivers license examiner will be at City Hall Myrtle Point Wes June 17 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Applicants should file license applications early to complete the test.
Othello Marjorie Bertrand 43 and Jean Daywak about 50, both Sitkum Route, were killed when their car collided with a chip truck at Newmark Street and U S Highway 101. A back-seat passenger Lloyd Junior Deaver 40 was injured and taken to McAuley Hospital.
The Red Cross bloodmobile returns to Myrtle Crest Gym today June 11 from 3 to 7 PM marking the second visit this year. An urgent donor appeal is issued as hospitals use over 6.5 million pints annually and a September drawing is planned.
