Fire destroys MP home in late night blaze

Dennis Duncan woke to his barking dog and evacuated his children from the burning two story home at 421 Fifth St. before firefighters arrived at 11 25 p m. Leona Shields owned the residence. One Duncan child suffered a chest burn during escape. Fire crews stayed on scene until 1 50 a m with cause still undetermined.

Truck driving trials set for Saturday at Coos County Fair

Trials and eliminations for the Coos County Fair and Albany Timber Carnival truck driving contests are scheduled for Saturday at the Myrtle Point fair grounds starting at 12 noon. If rained out, events shift to June 20. First place advances to the World Championship Timber Carnival in Albany and the Coos County Fair. second to fourth enter the fair. A $15 entry fee is charged.

Redwood trees praised for Myrtle Point area growth

Fire Chief Warns on Chimney Flue Blockages

Myrtle Point Fire Chief Mitch Myers warns homeowners against sealing chimney flues unless done by a competent mason. He cites past fires from blocked flues and a cabinet built over a chimney, including a blaze at 210 Sixth St on May 26. Myrtle Point Adopts Housing Program and Merits System

Myrtle Point City Council approved joining a housing authority leasing program with Coos County Housing Authority, with no city cost and rent subsidies for tenants. The council also adopted a merit-based personnel system and discussed sewer charges for Dutch Maid Laundromat, School District 41, and Safeway Ice Cream. residents questioned high bills under the new rate structure.

Antique Car Show invites entrants for Myrtle Point event

Seventy six invitations have been sent for Myrtle Point's seventh annual Antique Car Show to be held Saturday June 27. Chet Weed reports several local cars are expected. display spans three downtown blocks closed to traffic. Awards include three restoration divisions and a sweepstakes trophy plus hill climb trophies. A Pioneer National Fi the Insurance Co report shows 70 mortgages valued at 1 272 538.76 recorded in Coos County in May, surpassing the 923 848.12 figure for the same month last year. Mortgage totals for the year reach 241 mortgagers valued at 6 579 480.50.
