Rabies Clinic Set for Myrtle Point and Powers Pets

A rabies vaccination clinic will be held at the Myrtle Point fire station from 6 to 9 p.m. on June 7 or 9, with dogs and cats from area homes. Veterinarians will administer the vaccine as part of a health department effort to curb rabies amid rising wild animal infections. John Huff, chief sanitarian for Coos County, urged participation and noted the event is a rare state clinic.

Sheepmen Form Fat Lamb Market Pool in Coos County

Coos County Livestock Marketing Association members voted to organize a fat lamb market pool for fat lambs weighing 80 to 190 pounds. The first pool will grade at the ranch on June 33 and weigh and ship on June 24 at the Myrtle Point fairgrounds. A second pool is planned for July 8. producers should contact secretary Mrs Farrell Rankin or the county extension office in Coquille.

Elks Plan Flag Day Observance and July 4 Vigil

Coquille Valley Elks invite the public to Flag Day ceremonies on Sunday June 14 at 2 pm on lodge grounds with Judge John Warden as principal speaker and Frank Meldrum delivering the response. Troops 14 and 63 will present flags, and music will be provided by local and Salem Boy Scouts. Several Elks and legion posts add to the program.

Gillispie Injured in Cedar Point Crash

Mrs L F Geraldine Gillispie of Rink Creek Coquille in critical condition with a fractured pelvis lacerations and possible internal injuries after a Tuesday crash near Cedar Point. Her sons Rodney seven and Leslie six were in the car with their mother. Leslie had a fractured leg and was in good condition Wednesday. Jack Cole of Powers operated the westbound log truck involved in the collision. Floyd Bridgham of Myrtle Point won the women’s annual handicap championship at the Ginged in a tie for third.

Car Show Trophies Displayed in Myrtle Point June 27

Myrtle Point hosts an antique car show with five main trophies and age group prizes plus a longest distance prize. The event, under the Chamber Retail Trades committee, includes a downtown radio broadcast and music by the Country Boys. Roy Robinson and Chet Weed organize the display with police volunteers and car owners as guests to receive protection and courtesy.

Myrtle Point students head to Girls State and Oregon events

Myrtle Point and Powers residents embark on summer programs and commencements. Brenda Nichols and Laura Waldren attend Girls State Week, while Richard VanDuine travels to Oregon State University for an eight week summer institute. Laurence J. Wiwatowski earns a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Oregon Medical School commencement. Oregon State University notes its 95th annual graduation with about 2150 degrees. A six week corrective reading program runs in Myrtle Point starting June 22 with 55 students enrolled under District 41. Dr J H Gardner enters Drexel Institute for biomedical engineering post doctoral study and a space research training program.

Mail van schedule shift to serve Coos Bay area

Beginning August first the mail van service will stop at North Bend and a smaller truck will carry mail to Coos Bay Coquille Norway and Myrtle Point while returning Powers mail to Myrtle Point. The route is timed with Myrtle Point arrivals at 730 am and airmail at 210 pm with departures at 4 and 6 pm.

Bill Hamilton announces the opening of Bill's Chevon Service on 8th Street replacing Wilson's Chevron Service. The Myrtle Point Oil founder aims to maintain the quality service customers expect from Standard Stations. John Todd and Mike McCracken join him as staff at the new operation.
