Reed Gurney shines as Bobcats clinch state berth

Reed Gurney produced a brilliant vault of 13 feet 4 1/8 inches to win and lift the Bobcat track team into the District 3-4 tourney state qualifying meet in Corvallis. Myst ic Point set an 83 point record. several teams placed with strong relay times. Dan Rewinson suffered head injuries in a Monday car crash south of Coos Bay. he was treated and released. Local students were honored at SWOC awards banquet held Friday May 23 at the Timber Inn in Coos Bay.

Golf Handicap and Championship Close in Bad Week

Ed Bad Week wins by one stroke in the 18-hole tourney with a 268. Larry Wilson posts low net of 60 on 16 holes. Spruill and champions receive trophies as the Women’s Spring Handicap ends June 3 with dinner date to be announced. Mrs. Floyd Bridgham wins third 18-hole handicap title.

City Manager Seeks Roadway Exchange with County

Myrtle Point city seeks transfer of county roads to city control. City Manager Ben Nichols notes 16.1 miles of roads within city limits with 17 miles county roads and 12.32 miles city streets. Proposes county deed roads to city or cost sharing to bring standards, listing Maple Street Cravelford Road Spruce Street Reedsford Road River Road for negotiation.

Petitions For Street Improvements Heard By City Council

The city council received petitions for street improvements on one block of A Street north of Spruce and the Maryland extension from Myrtle Crest Lane for about two blocks. Plans call for storm sewers sidewalks curbs gutters and paving. The administration will prepare cost estimates and hold a hearing before bids. The council approved applying for state funds to pave each street from 8th to the end in front of Bee's Grocery and to overlay Maple from the railroad crossing to 4th Street. A taxi stand downtown and rate payment were referred to a committee for review.

Commencement Exercises for MPHS Class of 1964

Commencement exercises for the Myrtle Point High School class of 1964 were held May 28 in the high school gym with Rev Dorman Love delivering the invocation. Speakers included Salutatorian Anne Guerin and Valedictorian Edward Wells, plus Dr. Lillian Van Loan of SWO College.

Tragic Death of Paul Russell Aged 12

Paul Lew Russell died at 3 45 p m when he stood up in a traveling pickup and fell under a tire on a rural road in Arago Oregon. He was the son of Eddie and [surname] Russell of Arago and was accompanied by Wayne Stout 14 in the pickup bed. Services set for June 5 at Schroeder's Chapel with Rev Durman Love officiating.

Memorial Day Ceremony at Lennert Pioneer Park

A Memorial Day service held at Lennert Pioneer Park at 9 30 am featured Les Simoes and high school bandsmen. Ray Daniels and Ron Wells of Explorer Post 99 presented colors and led the flag salute. A gun salute was performed by American Legion members led by Bill Downing. The Lennerty Flagstaff was installed by Pacific Power and Light. Public address and programs were provided by local church groups.
