Public works funding for Oregon rivers and reservoirs

The Appropriations Committee endorsed Corps of Engineers investments totaling 32.882 million for construction planning and survey work and 2.518 million for operations and maintenance across the 4th District. It added 150 thousand for Applegate Reservoir planning and approved continued Lost Creek development while Elk Creek received no funds.

Somali Republic Harbor Project Led by Kenneth Peel

Kenneth Peel, chief engineer on a Somali Republic harbor project on the East Africa coast, plans to retire after completion. He has served as a government engineer since 1992 after education in Corvallis and San Francisco. The harbor work includes dredging and a breakwater to allow three ships to enter for exporting bananas and other goods.

Future Farmers Win Hereford Award at Eugene

The Myrtle Point Future Farmers team won the second of 17 awards at the Oregon Junior Hereford Annual Field Day in Eugene on June 1. Members are Vern Breuer Howard Porter Bartlett with John Brewer as alternate. instructor Vertin Mermen accompanied them.

Elks Memorial Day Service at Coquille Golf Club

The Coquille Valley Elks held their Memorial Day Play Day at the Elks Golf and Country Club with Exalted Ruler Francis as master. Frank Meldrum gave an oration “Operation History of the Flag” as Boy Scouts displayed flags from the snake flag to the 50 star flag. A rifle salute by the American Legion under Frank Menry closed the program and thanks were given to Les Simons for directing high school bands.

Myrtle Point Rabies Clinic Draws Crowd Across Region

The Myrtle Point Rabies Clinic at the fire hall drew residents from Powers and surrounding areas. Scouts aided the event while County Health reports show 1,458 animals immunized, with numbers by city: Coos Bay 337, Myrtle Point 396, Empire 268, Coquille 231, North Bend 287, and Bandon 190.

Planning Commission to Hear Zoning Ordinance June 25

Coos County planning commission schedules a public hearing at 7 15 p m in the county commissioners court house to consider adopting a county zoning ordinance and zoning maps. The proposal would apply to all unincorporated areas within the Coos Bay Area and Upper Coquille Region per preliminary comprehensive plans.

SWOC Summer Term Opens With Evening Courses

The 1964 Bibersl Arts Div high school graduates and workers can start summer term June 22. Courses cover Social Sciences such as Cultural Anthropology and History of Western Civilization with transfer credits possible within the Kate System. Registration at the college in North Bend is June 22 with morning and afternoon slots. Barbershops in Myrtle Point raise prices, one of the last towns in Oregon to do so.

X Ray Unit Visits Coos County This June

The Oregon State Board of Health loans the Mobil X Ray Unit to Coos County for three days in June plus three extra days in April. It will visit Powers on June 34 from 12 noon to 7 p.m. at Moose Hall and Seloweyketim Byrne Pelt on June 25 from noon to 7 p.m. Residents urged to check if they need an X ray.
