Myrtle Point Votes Down Sales Tax in 872 to 107 Margin

In Myrtle Point 872 residents opposed a 1969 Oregon sales tax package while 107 supported it. The statewide vote echoed the defeat as Oregon faced a fourth rejection of such a measure since 1947. Governor McCall said no special session planned this summer but may use state funds to aid property tax relief.

Wilberger Resigns as Port District Secretary

Wilberger announced his resignation as secretary of the Port of Coquille River District effective June 30. He was appointed to the board in 196? to fill an unexpired term and has since been elected to two subsequent terms.

Summer Reading Program Planned for June to July

School District 41 Supervisor Jim King announced a federally funded summer reading program set to run June 17 through July 31. The seven week program will operate three days a week at Myrtle Crest Grade School with two daily sessions for different age groups and a focus on new materials and field trips.

Chamber Hears Committee Reports on Roadway Contract

The MP Chamber discusses a contract including about a quarter mile of improved roadway on the west end and a low water bridge for highway equipment use. The Roy L. 81 Graduate At Commencement

81 Myrtle Point High School seniors received diplomas in the annual commencement in the high school gym. Grace Cushing valedictorian and Gloris Hardman salutatorian spoke after Dan Grove welcomed the class of 1969. Principal William Richardson presented diplomas.

Funeral Services Held For Alfa Carter

Funeral services for Alfa Carter daughter of Oregon pioneers were held at the Jacobson Funeral Home Portland with Rev Walter Gray officiating. She died May 25 1969 in Portland after a long illness aged 92. Surviving are her children Gladys Cummins Hilda Clem and Clarence CO with numerous grandchildren great grandchildren and a brother O Dodge of Riverside California. Interment followed at Lincoln Memorial Park May 27 1969.

Fisher Named MP Football Coach at Myrtle Point

Don Fisher, former assistant varsity coach at Myrtle Point High School, is appointed head football coach after Jack Heaves resigns to pursue a master's degree at the University of Texas. Fisher, Easter Oregon College graduate, has coached and taught at EOC and MP, is married to Joyce, and serves as city recreation director in the summer.

Myrtle Crest Eighth Grade Graduation Planned Tonight

Myrtle Crest Elementary School will hold graduation for about ten percent of its eighth graders at 8 pm. The class motto is Education Is the Key to success and pink and white are the colors with the Rhododendron as class flower. Principal Paul T. Franzen will present the class and Gienn Gubtrum will present the diplomas.

One-Car Crash Injures Three Near Sitkum Route

A Volkswagen left control and rolled into a ditch on Sitkum Route Crosby Road. Dale Wilson sustained head and shoulder injuries and was hospitalized at McAuley in Coos Bay. Terry Bushnell and Terry Troxell were uninjured but badly shaken.
