Shodeo Opens With Riding Contest and Queen’s Pageant

Coos County hosts a weekend Shodeo at the fairgrounds arena featuring a queen’s contest with 19 entrants led by judges Bill Russell and Tom O Dwyer. Finalists perform two minute speeches Sunday on the given topic as hundreds of dollars in trophies are awarded for games, races, and stock horse events.

New Myrtle Grange hall under construction

At a June 7 meeting a large crew leveled ground for the new Myrtle Grange hall. Eva Stevens chaired as Late Chairman of District 1 and was elected Delegate of State Grange. A Hi Way Safety Contest awarded a fifty dollar bond for under 16 participation.

Seniors Win Big Scholarships At Myrtle Point Commencement

More than 20 Myrtle Point High School seniors received scholarships with over 16000 dollars in state awards. Grace Cushing led the list with multiple honors including local district state and national scholarships and awards from Danforth and Readers Digest. Other recipients span Oregon beauty and technical schools, OSU awards, Southwestern Oregon Community College grants, and four year full rides at McKay School of Mines.

Teachers Attend NSF Summer Institute at A&M University

Robert W. Breitkreutz of Myrtle Point joins 37 other secondary school teachers at Texas A&M University for the National Science Foundation Summer Institute session. The group studies earth sciences including astronomy meteorology and oceanography with field trips to Galveston on June 13 14 and to the San Antonio area June 27 through July 4.

School board scales back Myrtle Point Coquille consolidation push

Myrtle Point District 41 board shelved plans to circulate consolidation petitions and build a joint high school with Coquille. Petitions exist at the administration building but have no legal force unless turnout marks a practical impact. Bay TV and Bakery Building to Be Replaced in Bay

Bay Radio and TV plans to tear down the Myrtle Bakery building this week in a city project with Peat's Melody Shop. They aim to remove both structures by August 1 and replace them with a modern facility on Spruce Street featuring 4661 feet of frontage, a balcony with three practice rooms and a taping room, plus a full electronics and appliance lineup.
