Myrtle Point post office announces Arthur Ratcliffe James Hoove and Chas Susson awarded certificates for reaching 500 hours in the Portland region Sick Leave club. Eligibility requires 500 hours at 104 hours per year with acknowledgement of devotion to duty and potential pursuit of 1000 hour club thereafter.
Rotary International President Harold T Thomas will visit Eugene August 7 8 and 9 as part of a world tour. He and Mrs Thomas attend a dinner meeting August 7 with district 511 Rotarians and their wives. Eugene Rotary club officials Gordon Coleman Alton F Baker and Erwin B Lemon coordinate events for the three day visit marking the first international president visit to the local club.
A Salt Lake City editorial argues against government snooping to expose income tax cheating. It accuses both major parties and various groups of cheating taxpayers while proposing tax law reform to reduce reliance on auditors and unjust government expansion.
Despite a recent lumber mill fire the Agness Illahe area held a successful fourth annual Rogue River White Water boat race and barbecue Sunday. Attendance matched last year though some events were canceled due to fire hazards. Amateur photographers captured the day with constant camera flashes as contests including queen of the day and wire water boat race proceeded amid festive host community spirit.
The Herald notes an apology to the ladies at Agnes booth for a faulty photograph at the Agness pioneer museum display during a Sunday barbecue. The camera failed to click as intended, and the error was discovered after the accompanying story was written.
A CL&M Lumber Co. sawmill at Agness burned last Friday afternoon causing an estimated loss of 85 000 dollars. The 10 man crew was left without a mill. Owners Mr and Mrs Wesley Morgan have no rebuilt plans. Fire started in a slash and dust pile and raged until flames spread. George Murray, Agness forest ranger, led firefighters aided by 50 CLAM workers in efforts to control the fire.

Fourteen crippled children from Camp Easter Seal at Florence were entertained at Norway Speedway on Sunday July 26. Mrs Yarbrough provided free drinks and hot dogs at the Fred S Yarbrough ranch east of Brodie's mill and race car owners gave rides around the track. A benefit race for Camp Easter Seal is planned for Norway Speedway to support the children.
Myrtle Point residents can use donated wampum as “money” at a Saturday auction on Sixth Street between Spruce and Nipple. Harold Watzling says $1250000 worth of new merchandise will be offered for free to the highest bidders, with booths, food, and music adding to the event sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and local merchants.
The Myrtle Point Herald announces a Dollar Day next Saturday August 1 offering a one year subscription for 2.00, a discount of one dollar. Renewals with a new license bring both old and new to 1.50 each for one year, one time only. Herald office hours 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Mr and Mrs A R Fletcher of Coquille purchase Tanglewood resort for about 600000. The plan calls for expansion into motels and lake improvements to create the region's premier convention center with active management by Mrs Fletcher and ongoing roles for Mr Fletcher.
Texas House approved a resolution on May 5 1959 urging Congress to submit a Proposed 23rd Amendment for ratification or call a constitutional amendment. Senate concurred May 6 1959. The measure would restrict federal government business and tax powers, joining Wyoming and signaling Florida interest.
The State Public Utilities Commission schedules a hearing for Aug 4 at 9 30 a m at Myrtle Point city hall to decide if Southern Pacific Railroad Co and American Express may discontinue the local agency. Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce and Elden Broe will present protests with others to follow.
