Citizens are asked to dress Western and support local stores marketing Western attire.

Herald reports on the Corcoran Connelly mill demoing a new slab thrower by Harrel Hutchinson and Henry Rowell. The gasoline powered device feeds slabs into a drum with steel spikes, hurling waste into a canyon. Four machines sold to Vatne Bros and others. price cited at 2160 plus 725.50 for motor equipment.
In a weekly letter Ellsworth reports on the Springfield plant built to produce ethyl alcohol from wood waste. The project waned after WW II, the plant became surplus and was leased, then failed. Now the GSA plans to sell it with bids favoring a going business using wood waste. Ellsworth cites a large company with vision to rebuild Springfield into a producing operation.
Oregon State Game Commission set the 1953 buck deer season from October 3 to 16 with a hunter’s choice period October 17 to 20. Bull elk runs October 31 to November 22, and an antelope permit hunt will occur August 22 to 27 for 400 holders in two southeastern Oregon areas.
A 10 year old Norw ay boy Jimmy Brodie started a pony ride business on highway 42 selling Shetland pony rides for 10 cents. His first customers grew to many, attracting kids from Coos county and beyond, proving youthful initiative endures in America.
The Myrtle Point Community band plans Monday street performances through fair time to boost the Centennial Queen contest. On this Monday evening the 35 members played to a small crowd from downtown and passing autos, with a concert slated weekly at 8 p m as the band seeks continued public support.
The Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce hosts a Centennial Queen contest on August 14 in cooperation with the Coos County Fair Board to aid the Myrtle Point Community Band. Four candidates Elaine Dunn Peggy Dayton Arlene Aasen and Shirley Tobey seek votes by selling contest buttons with proceeds supporting the event and coronation night at Oaks pavilion.
Myrtle Point couple Mr. and Mrs. Gurney observed their 50th wedding anniversary on July 19 in Seattle at the Beacon Lutheran Church. They wed July 23, 1903 in Edgeley North Dakota, officiated by Rev. E Wember, brother of Mrs. Gurney. They have lived in Myrtle Point over 30 years.
Rev. Richard Gross of Calvary Lutheran church Coos Bay will preach at Myrtle Point Lutheran church Sunday at 11 am. Sunday school starts 9 45 am. Local pastor Rev Norbert G A Heins conducts Reedsport service 8 45 am and 11 am sermon for mission Sunday at Calvary Reedsport then travels to Gold Beach for 7 pm service. Heins visits Brookings Crescent City Grants Pass and returns to Myrtle Point midweek.
The Methodist Sunday school and church picnic will follow morning services next Sunday at Davenport Grove on Catching Creek. Members and friends are urged to attend with personal plates silverware and a potluck dinner.
