A letter from a reader asks for the name and address of a river dredging company to fix a river bank and mine the river bed with gold. The writer hints at employing questionable methods and references the Sixes river amid fishing fraternity opposition. Continued on Page Nine.
Informal Oregon Federation of Business and Professional Women clubs meeting set for July 31 and August 1 at Sherwood Lodge Ya h y state president Mrs Natalie Burks of Toledo will preside. Myrtle Point BPW delegates Mrs Wm Downing state treasurer and Mrs Beulah president will attend. Weekend includes district chairmen meeting 3:00 p m Saturday and state officers session 4:30 p m followed by a 6:30 p m dinner and 8:30 a m Sunday breakfast session.
Myrtle Point Saddle Club members rode by horseback and by vehicle to Minnie King ranch on Baker Creek near Powers for a weekend gathering. They met at Wallace Pement ranch, shared a potluck dinner, swam, sang by a bonfire, and rode the range to round up cattle before returning home praising Mrs. King as a wonderful hostess.
On Sunday July 25 a sweep stake race tournament was held with Mrs Schroeder and Mrs Thomas among top finishers. In the adult division Clayton Mast won the event and Garry Morris placed first in another heat, with competition noted as lively in the Coquille Valley gathering.
The Coos County Chamber of Commerce highway committee met to propose five major road improvements. Plans include abandoning Highway 42 between Coquille and Powers Junction, completing Highway 101, upgrading the Allegany road, removing weight restrictions on Powers Road, and linking Cape Arago to Bandon as a tourist road. A state build of a 10 mile paved strip was urged and a joint dedication of the Billards Bridge and the North Bend Reedsport stretch was proposed for Aug six with details pending. Attendees included W J Crim Hans Nelson Lawrence Wilke M E Ek Harry Levage Jack Bowen A L Burch George Burr and Frank Calise.
Myrtle Point High School district will receive $25,810.70 from Coos county tax delinquent land sale proceeds totaling $500,606. The county general fund will gain $220,804.54, with $179,515.36 for maintenance and supervision. Also distributed: Market Road Fund, Rural School Fund, Powers district, and other sawyer funds, plus benefits to Bandon and Coos Bay ports.
The Coos office of the Bureau of Land Management announces planning for 1955 timber sales. Priority will go to salvage of fire killed, wind thrown, and bottle infested timber. Prospective purchasers are invited to submit sale ideas and salvage tract suggestions for inclusion in the annual plan.

Harmony Chorus under Audrey Migir from Pasadena will perform a special concert at the Coquille Community building on Wednesday August 4. The group, 50 voices strong, is known for weekly radio broadcasts and national recordings linking singers from over 30 Southland churches.
Roy B. McAllister was acquitted by a nine to three jury Tuesday July 20 in Coquille Circuit Court. He faced an assault with a dangerous weapon charge tied to the stabbing of Newell Dae cat months earlier. McAllister claimed self defense.
H A Hoyt of Myrtle Point Oregon reports a registered Jersey cow set a 105 day production record of 10 868 pounds milk with 611 pounds butterfat at age 5 years 8 months The record was supervised by the Oregon Jersey Cattle Club and the Jersey breed registry in Columbus Ohio The entry is noted in the Herd Improvement Registry listing July 22
At the Coos Cade Fair August 19 to 22 an inaugural cutting horse contest draws interest. Harold Clarno says a dozen or more registered quarter horses will compete with entries from Oregon California and Arizona including Barney Satan Lucky Boy A Sunshine Buckskin Cat Maybe and others as top Northwest contenders.
Coos County Republicans announced that Vice-President Richard Nixon may speak in August. The notice came at a Republican dinner at the Coquille Valley Art Association on Highway 42. Minnie Dees, club ident and GOP county official, announced the plan. Jean Young, secretary of the Republican state central committee, was the main speaker. A brief address from the state Republican club followed. About forty people attended.
A call for rooms during the county fair August 19 to 23 asks locals to rent space. Those with rooms to offer are urged to contact the Myrtle Motel as soon as possible.
Byron Bell of American Legion Post No 38 was named district commander at the state convention in Coos Bay last week. He will lead the district for 1964-55, covering Brookings Port Orford Reedsport North Bend Coos Bay Powers and Myrtle Point. Attendees included Past Commander Byron Bell, Commander Henry Rowell, and Service Officer Bill Dowing.
Miss Alice Hammer of Myrtle Point wins the Southern Oregon Junior Golf Tournament in Medford after holding the low gross score in the girls division and beating her opponent by one point. She is the daughter of Paul Hammer and has been playing golf for about a year.
G B Goddard superintendent reports annual high school costs totaling 128 832 01 with items for instruction plant operation maintenance and repair auxiliary agencies and fixed charges The 1960 enrollment reached 362 students up from 339 the prior year. projected enrollment for 1956 57 was 450 The Coos County area remains a rapidly growing part of Oregon.

The Henry A. Schroeder and Sons Furniture Store invites the public to a Carnival July featuring new repaint ranges. Manager A Hay and Chuck Walker promote three shows with start times at 1:38 p.m., 2:00 p.m., and 7:28 p.m., each with an all star cast and a free gift for the first 60 entrants. Prizes awarded after all three performances. The event is set for Friday July 30.
Nine boys from Troop are at Tsiltcoos camp this week including Don Wagner Jim Estaad Larry Neugart Tim Woolley Ben Brodie Danny Noyes John Todd Darwin Noyes and Richard Daniels. Over 500 boys checked in Sunday to participate in activities such as swimming poeing skeet shooting life saving handcraft rifle range and more. Four local counsellors are spending a few days there with the boys and ash Scout Master Ralph Toads Mr and Mrs Brodie and Mrs Dealand Mr and Mrs Laverne Nepes assist.
