The Myrtle Point PTA announces kindergarten opens around October. Mrs. Laverne Noyes will teach the class, and parents of eligible preschool children should register at the Myrtle Point Herald office starting Monday August 16. Registration asks for child name and age. only those entering school next year qualify.
Graveside services were held for Rastus Colbert Baylor 56 at Norway cemetery after he was found burned to death in a cabin in the Big Creek area. State police said the cabin had not been used for decades and burned Wednesday night. He is survived by wife Orell, mother Joyce Baylor, sisters Olive Secor Edna McLoud Alma Lynch, brothers Preston and Ima Weathers, and Marion Weathers.
A few new booths remain for the Coos County Fair exhibits August 19 to 22 with many reservations made. Harold Clarno secretary manager notes a new commercial exhibit space under the south bleacher and improvements to seating. Pete Parrish caretaker reports grounds kept in tip top condition and extra granges exhibit this year.
The Coos County Fair parade on Saturday August 21 at 10 a m will feature the Keep Oregon Green theme highlighting logging. Myrtle Point Saddle Club organizes with Minnie King chairing. prizes total 225 with trophies for bands, commercial entries, 4 H and FFA, riding and ranch divisions. notable entries include Bever Pony Farm Shetland ponies Bill Bingham and daughter Sharon with trick horses and Lane County Girls Posse members.
The Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce asks local businesses to close from 1 to 4 pm on Friday and Saturday August 20 and 21 during the Coos County Fair. The group approves flags in the business district, a city directory for 1800 residents, and posting signs enforcing no door to door solicitations under the Green Ordinance.
The Myrtle Point Community Band will give a public concert at City Park on Spece 84 Monday evening August 6 at 6 o clock. Residents are urged to attend.
Rotary Club leaders at the Myrtle Hotel last Thursday announced a donation toward new Public Library fixtures. The meeting drew nearly thirty attendees and also approved sponsoring a float for the Coos county fair parade on August 21. Guests included Charles Frazier of Honolulu and Charles Gault of West Hollywood.
West Coast Telephone Company filed for higher rates with the Public Utilities Commissioner citing rising operating costs and capital needs. Ray Dalton, vice president, notes plant in service rose from 7.84 million after WWII to 27.41 million by mid 1950s, justifying expansion including dial equipment and new construction. Residential rates would rise modestly, with Myrtle Point four party service moving from 3.00 to 3.60 per month and one party business from 6.75 to 8.75 per month.
Eugene Oregon superintendent of Methodist Churches will preach at the local church this Sunday at 11 a m. His sermon titled Freeborn will address the general public invited to attend the service.
A Myrtle Point Union High School student created a primavera bow in industrial arts that earned fourth place in a national woodturning contest sponsored by Ford Motor Company. Ben Ash supervised the project, with the bowl to be exhibited at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago from August 15th to September 30th.
The Myrtle Point Herald is awarded a wooden plaque shaped like the fate of Oregon by Keep Oregon Green Association for outstanding support of forest fire prevention education. Signed by Governor Paul L. Patterson and Paul M. Dunn, the plaque was presented this week by Stella Cutlip of Coos Bay and Virgil E. Starr with the Bureau of Land Management.
Dr McFarlane of Salent will judge the cutting horse contest at the Coos County Fair. He brings thirty years of eastern Oregon horse experience, ranching and showing western breeds, and owns a fine registered Meares band including Nutcracker. A novelty act features two horses ridden bridle free from Salem and California respectively.
Homemakers from Curry and surrounding counties will attend a four day camp at Camp Myrtlewood from August 5 to 8. Activities include glow candle making by Mrs. Sylvia C. Lee and craft projects such as moccasins and billfolds. Mrs Sally Schroeder will assist with sessions and the event offers mother and children a vacation week with rest, meals, and learning opportunities.
The Northwest lumber strike stretches into a seventh week as players and workers reject settlement proposals and a new offer to arbitrate is put forward. Union leaders push for a negotiated settlement amid unresolved labor disputes at Pacific Northwest mills.
Paint work continues on Ritchie Super Service where finishing touches are added and nearby Shell Service Station also receives a coat of paint. Morning activity began early Monday with crews repainting exteriors in the town.
Myrtle Point residents vote in a special election on August 24 to adopt a new city charter. City council discusses updating the charter, building permit cases from Union Oil Co. and Perkins Oil Co. with costs around 16 000 and 10 000, sidewalk work for the public library, and salary boosts for city staff.
