North Bend area land seized through condemnation by the Navy department to form an airport and related lands. County offered 7,5000 as compensation, accepted by Navy. State highway department to maintain North Bank road with federal funding. Prosper precinct voting reestablished with Prosper schoolhouse as polling place. Fire lookout caution notes possible parachute drops amid wartime concern.
The local air observation corps schedules Aircraft Warning Service Week from August 1 to 7 with full staffing. O H H Peters, chief observer, reports all watches filled around the clock. A business solicitation netted over $60 for the corps to upgrade or replace the post.
Funeral services for E. E Uck Johnson pioneer resident of the Coquille valley were held Sunday at the Methodist church in Coquille with Rev Kenton of Portland officiating. Interment was in Coquille Masonic cemetery. Survivors include his widow Mrs Julian Crane Johnson daughter Mary Esther Kash son Phillip E Johnson and several siblings. John son operated a sawmill in Coquille valley for two years and previously owned the Johnson Lumber company later the Coquille Mill company. He arrived in the area over 60 years ago from California with his family. Also named are Mrs Esther Dollar Mrs Ethel Mehl McC Johnson and a grandson Buddy Johnson.

Albert J Reed and wife to teach at Kokrines Alaska Community Indian School next year. Mina Belva Haseltin from Portland visited her mother and is employed in an electrical shipyard department.
Over 1500 pounds of meat including veal pork and beef were canned this week at the Union High School Community Cannery in the Myrtle Point Creamery building. Mrs Edna Hoffman supervised cutting and packaging while Mrs Sylvia Kerr processed and cooked the meat. The operation, now two weeks old, serves over 30 families with appointments on Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday.
Harry Rankin formerly of Myrtle Point was killed October 26 aboard the aircraft carrier Hornet near the Solomon Islands. He and three other navy men died from machine gun fire during a Japanese air attack and were buried at sea. Rankin’s sister Betty Wicks of Des Moines confirmed details after a shipmate’s return home.

Innis Rose longtime Myrtle Point resident died Wednesday at the Veterans hospital in Portland after treatment there. His body arrives home for burial at Schroeder Undertaking Parlors at 2 30 Friday with Rev Marion Stern officiating. Burial in Myrtle Point cemetery with local American Legion taking part. Rose served in the AEF and was aboard a transport sunk off the coast of Ireland. He was active in local Legion affairs.
The Cops and Curry Pioneer Association held a large Sunday meeting in Coquille with more than 390 pioneers and families attending. Speakers included Mrs. Alice B. Maloney A G Beals and Mayor J Albert Marcon. Officiants announced plans for a museum and relics archive to preserve early local history.
Rev Jas Ballenger resigns as supply pastor after preaching his last sermon Sunday at the Church of Christ. He and his wife visit Tacoma then head to Phillipe University in Oklahoma for the coming school year. Rev Ballenger has studied at Northwest Christian College Eugene and aided the local church.
