Paul Harvey argues that British Socialists will finance control of major industries through stock and direct ownership. He warns this could create a monopoly worse than historic rulers, with labor leaders directing key firms in shipbuilding, manufacturing, chemicals, and aircraft.
The Fair Parade Theme committee selected two winning themes for the 46th Coos County Fair Parade from 35 proposals. Members include Al Wyld as chairman and Dick McCuskey, Lee Barklow, Ann Roush, Mrs. C. D. Naslund, and George Hall. Myrtle Point submitted identical ideas.
The Coos County Mounted Sheriff's Posse stages its first annual horse show and roping contest this Sunday at Clover ranch near Coquille. Program starts 1 p.m. Entries include Coos County Showcase. Winners Mrs Sanford and Mrs Rankin receive free admission at their date and all grand shows during the four-day event.
Clippings from the 1887 Herald of Coquille describe real estate bargains near Gravel Ford and Bear Creek, including farms from 60 to 500 acres with houses, orchards, and timber. Other notices advertise a six-barrel brewery and a steamship schedule between Coquille and Bandon.
Floyd K. Dover, Salem State Veterans' Affairs officer and national secretary of the social security clubs of America, will speak to Coos county veterans Thursday night at 7 30 at the Coquille city council chamber. Mil ford Harris chairs the Coos county service officer committee who called the meeting.
Reports from the July fair board meeting in Myrtle Point outline a 46th annual fair opening August 14 for five days. The program features the Harley Tucker Rodeo, judging contests, a big horse show, animal scrambles, horse racing, bull fighting, Grange Talent Show, carnival, and a grand parade named Coos County Showcase. A Queen will reign over the event and a cowboy breakfast is planned. The Hillah Temple Shrine Band is among major participants.

The Agness Community Council announces a $1,000 prize for the annual Barbecue and Boat Race on the Rogue River August 11. Rivermen Hugh McGinnis, Bud Thurston, George Morey, and Rosen Garcia vie with Garcia’s speed boat to lead the pack over Shasta Costa and two miles of riffles. The Generals' Trophy and an $800 prize will also be displayed at Security Bank in Le Point. The second annual event promises a full day of river racing and entertainment at Agness.
Edwin O Carter, a Myrtle Point resident for 74 years and former city marshal, died July 17 at the state hospital in Salem Way. Funeral services were held at Schroeder chapel with Rev Lloyd Swenson officiating, then at Eugene crematorium. Survivors include a foster daughter Harriet Depyrea. brother Cecil Carter. sister Mrs T G Sumerlin and two other sisters, Mrs A Mentzel and Mrs L Buchanan. Carter, born near Corvallis March 13 1866, was a retired timberman and longtime Odd Fellow charter member.
Floyd Maxwell, a veteran Portland and Northwest theatre executive, is named managing director of the 1958 Oregon Centennial Exhibition and International Trade Fair to be held in Portland. Planning advances include using the Pacific International Livestock Exposition facility in North Portland. He has led major theatre operations from Seattle to Nassau, including the West Coast Theatres, Broadway, Paramount, and the RKO group, and has served on civic boards in Los Angeles.
A drivers license examiner will be on duty in Myrtle Point at city hall on Wednesday July 31 1957 from 9 a m to 4 p m per the Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles notice.
The Coos Bay Wagon Reed event at Jackson Park on August 4 features musicians from Roseburg Sumner and local dance teams. A potluck dinner will accompany music and dancing starting at 10:00 Sunday forenoon. The association secretary recently traveled the area to promote the gathering.
