Oregon Game Commission proposes liberal big game seasons
The Oregon Game Commission released tentative hunting regulations after a public hearing on July 8. A 23 day deer season runs October 1 to 23 with most areas open for one deer of either sex in the final nine days, plus twelve extended hunts in problem areas. Elk season runs October 29 to November 13 with controlled hunts in 26 areas. Archers may hunt elk in three zones with a bow of at least 50 pounds and 500 grain arrows. Pheasant and quail seasons run October 22 to November 13 with a four cock daily bag and up to 12 per season. one hen may be taken in north Malheur county in the last four days.

County Receives 84335 From Coos Bay Wagon Road Funds
The county will receive 84335 44 distributed to local taxing districts including 19690 for the county 32736 to the rural school district and the rest to individual school districts. A federal check for the full amount was presented to County Treasurer Willard Waggoner by Ross Youngblood of the Bureau of Land Management in Coquille. The total covers supplementary payments 1949 1952 due to a 1949 timber assessment rise with wagon road lands. Also included is the 1953 54 fiscal year payment with 64227 still due for 1954 55. The government owns about 72000 acres of wagon road lands 59000 in Coos county the rest in Douglas county.

Davenport Receives High Breeder Award from Jersey Club
W R Davenport of Myrtle Point earned a top Breeder Award from the American Jersey Cattle Club. The national Jersey registry in Columbus Ohio notes his balanced herd program, four years ownership, and strong production and type records. Thirteen cows dated over ten months on the registry, averaging 9496 pounds milk and 528 pounds butterfat yearly. fifteen animals averaged 84.83 percent type, with one animal rated excellent in sire/breed type.

Dr. O. H. Clarke Paroled After Seven Months
Dr. O. H. Clarke, 75, was released on parole from the state penitentiary after about seven months of a seven year term. He served for manslaughter tied to an August operation that led to Eureka resident Elinor Kiefer's death. Clarke, who gave up his medical license, resides now at his Myrtle Point home.

Jack Orr has been hired as an instructor at Myrtle Point High School. He earned a Master’s degree in Physical Education with a Biology minor from Oregon State College in 1954, after serving in the U S Air Force. He is a three year letterman in basketball and baseball. Powers Death Termed death by own action
The death July 10 of Lillian Brooks, 23, of Powers, was termed death by own action by the district attorney's office after an investigation. An autopsy indicated death due to aspirin poisoning with about 300 aspirins taken. Three empty bottles, each containing 100 aspirins, were found at the scene.
