Claude Giles of Coos Bay will give the address at the annual Pioneer Picnic to be held in McCloskey grove, Norway, on Sunday July 17. The program includes a Community Sing led by Mrs. Odelid Wilson with instrumental music by Mr. and Mrs. Jack McCain, Arago, crowning of the queen, and officer elections. A basket luncheon is served at 1 p.m. with coffee and provisions provided by the Coos Curry Pioneer and Historical association. Attendees from Coos and Curry counties and others are urged to bring baskets and table service.
Inter-Church eDaily Vacation Bible School concludes Friday night July 15 at 7 30 pm in First Methodist Church with a display of children s handwork from 630 to 730 pm The event features a program highlighting Bible knowledge and songs learned over two weeks The superintendent and teachers from multiple departments are listed and 140 pupils enrolled.
The Inter-church Fellowship of Myrtle Point announces the arrival of Rev. Phil Shuler of Pasadena California for a two week fall evangelistic campaign from September 11 to 25. Shuler will conduct services in Maple Primary School gym with his wife assisting and presiding over the service.
The Myrtle Point Lions club won the Highest Achievement Award in Activities at the State Lions convention in Pendleton in June. A bronze plaque was presented to Past President Frank Meldrum on Wednesday night by District Governor Bill Miller of Coos Bay. The award recognizes a year of outstanding community building work and the recently dedicated project.
L H Pearce donated six hundred books to the city library, now on shelves per Library board member Mrs George Linn. The gift includes fiction, late editions, non fiction and notable volumes such as Burl Ives song book Famous Pictures by renowned authors The Songs You Forgot to Remember by Sigmund Spaeth two large Bibles King James and Dovey versions. Librarian Mrs T G Sumerlin notes June circulation reached 2018 items, averaging 78 per open day across 26 days.
Myrtle Crest school offers new Archery classes starting July 18 every day 11 to 12 noon with instructor Duane Netland. Clay Modeling sessions run Tue and Thu 11 to 12 at the Scout building. Younger children attend 9 and 10 at Myrtle Crest grounds. Pee Wee Baseball clubs gearing for outside play with Coquille Bandon and Winston on schedule. times to be announced.
The Myrtle Point Inter-Church Fellowship sponsors Sunday evening union services starting this evening. The 8 p.m. service will be at the Brethren church with Theodore Smith leading the music and a film planned for July 31 at the Presbyterian church.
Oregon producers may obtain new movement tags for cattle calves sheep and hog carcasses after August from Coos county brand inspector and live stock sales yards. The state department of agriculture in Salem notes only one tag will be required under 1955 amendments and poultry rabbit tags end August 3. Distribution shifts to brand inspectors and designated officers, with sheriff offices still able in some counties to issue tags.

The forty fourth annual Coos County Fair in Coquille August 17 21 will include a Trade Show with 40 exhibitors expected. Bread contest prizes rise with Crown Mills donating a flour prize and queen awards. J L Smith and Miss Webster coordinate prizes and entries. The parade gains bigger prize money and judges include Nayda Whybark. Certification of sheep dog contest possible with entries via Ann Roush. Clown acts, talent show improvements, and a larger carnival stage are planned.
The council approved a $48 141 36 bid from Products Co of Ceos Bay to improve District 3 with curbs gutters sidewalks and storm sewers. The project runs west by Fourth Street north by Maple east by Eighth and south by Deberout, extending sewer lines toward the Roeeburg highway. A special meeting July 18 will discuss financing and further plans with Chamber representatives.
Harris Ellsworth notes the president urged a large highway program funded by government bonds and a higher federal gas tax. The bill now in committee will differ from the plan, mainly authorizing current highway spending with revenue boosted by gas tax.
Mr and Mrs William Gross were injured in an automobile collision near Ten Mile on Saturday afternoon while en route to the Andy Weber ranch. Their car and another were demolished. Mrs Gross was taken to Roseburg hospital with shock and bruises. Mr Gross suffered a chin cut and two broken teeth. They returned home Monday noon.
A July 7 garden tour by the Arago club featured Coos Head McKinley Joly Gardeners and Myrtle Point Garden clubs with 38 women visiting Florence Sydnam garden and Lath House. The lantern greenhouse displayed citrus and orchids while a Fall Flower Show was planned for Sept 17-18 at the Arago gym under the theme Autumn Sunset. The afternoon tour included Donald Stricker’s Langlois garden and Magnolia rhododendron collections, followed by visits to greenhouses in Bandon.
The home of Mr. and Mrs. Boone Hensley and their son near Cemetery Road was completely destroyed by fire around two o clock on Tuesday. Estimated damage was ten thousand dollars with partial insurance. The blaze started from faulty wiring and was first noticed by Mr. Hensley about 11 pm prompting neighbor aid. The Hensleys and their son escaped in night clothing. Mrs. Hensley later admitted to hospital with flu complications.
The Myrtle Point Union annual Alumni Picnic is set for Sunday. The Class of 1899 marks their 25th reunion and will be seated together at a special table.
Eugene Rotary District Governor Alton F. Baker will visit Myrtle Point Rotary on July 20 and 21. The July 20 program starts at 7 30 PM at the Paul Breu Club with Baker speaking at a club night and luncheon on July 21.
