Oregon drivers face a 2.75 dollar license price beginning August 9 after a 25 cent raise approved by the legislature. The license costs 1 dollar to the state, one dollar funds student driver education, and 75 cents, including the 25 cent rise, goes to the accident fund to cover unpaid medical costs from motor vehicle crashes.
The Coos County Fair will feature a Golden Anniversary day for couples who celebrated 50 years of marriage. Henry Schroeder reports complimentary passes to grounds grandstand and activities for all Golden Wedding couples. The fair will honor those tied to the Golden Anniversary theme with many likely couples from the county.
The city plans to install a four swing unit in the west end park after a council discussion two weeks ago. Rotary park offers more facilities, but the west-end site will receive swings soon with possible adoption by local clubs to fund and furnish equipment.
Stop and Shop awards $100 prizes each Saturday with a chance for a winner. Paul Buchanan tipped the $300 prize on the last award day. participants must register with a participating merchant and be in the store at 2 p.m. for the name draw. if no one is present, another $100 is added next Stop and Shop day.
A drivers license examiner will be on duty in Myrtle Point at City Hall on Wednesday July 26 1961 from 9 am to 4 pm. The notice is published to inform residents of the upcoming service window.
Voters across Myrtle Point Powers and surrounding communities backed the new Community College. The district wide tally was 3365 in favor 2012 against with Myrtle Point scoring 250 to 81 and Sitkum 34 to 1 in favor. Coquille offers a hilltop site with chamber and city council backing while Bay area also lobbies.
The Myrtle Point Rotary Club won City Council permission to place three concrete planters along Spruce Street as part of the city beautification effort. Rotary President Jack Davis said local business leaders will water and maintain the planters, with the club handling planting and upkeep.

Seventy two players took part in the inter club tourney at Coquille Valley Golf and Country Club with Coquille beating Bandon 50 to 40 to claim the Royal Master Trophy for the third straight time. Eric Dettman shot 74 to lead Coquille while Bandon’s Ray Baird posted 71 as top scorer.
Durham will move from Portland to Myrtle Point to open Durham Variety in the vacant Haga building at 6th and Spruce Louis. The store will occupy the full 56 by 100 foot space with two front checking stands and wall displays. Durham has extensive background in major chains and aims for a ready-to-serve, fully stocked local retail store. He and his wife have four children and plan to open before the August 16 fair.
A report this week shows the Southern Coes county drive near its goal of $16,000, with contributions totaling $17,108.00. Director Jechoun Beare oversees the effort and charts progress.
The Myrtle Point City Council approved an ordinance establishing a salary floor and ceiling for all city employees. Adjustments will be made by resolution within the schedule rather than by the older ordinance process. The City Administrator’s pay is set within the new range.
