Voters in Southwestern Oregon Area Education district vote today on a 3269 mill budget for operation and capital outlay to launch the Community College this fall. The plan includes state matching funds and aims to offer both vocational and academic tracks with local two year credit transfer to four year colleges.
Linda Olsen of Cous county earned first alternate in the Oregon Dairy Princess contest held in Portland June 29 and 30. Barbara Steinfeld of Scapoose won the title. Olsen will appear at dairy events when Barbara is unavailable.
Vernon Estelle, a Myrtle Point trucker, sustained a crushed left leg and chest injuries when a log fell from his load while unloading at Sherwood Forest log dump. He was treated at Mast Hospital and transferred to Keizer Hospital in North Bend for further care.
Sade Kendall of Myrtle Point, 13, sea fishing on a Hansen charter boat near Charleston caught a large Chinook on her first trip over the bar. The total party of four caught four fish with the girl supplying the big catch. Judy Kendall, an 8th grader at Myrtle Crest, plans to pursue fishing after this debut.

The Myrtle Point Sportsmen's Club will hold a practise shoot at the Trap Grounds Friday night at 8 pm. Members and all interested shooters are invited.
The Myrtle Point junior team edged Coos Bay to stay in playoff contention as the regular season nears its end. The rough match featured tight defense and key plays that kept both sides in the race for post-season action.
A film titled Operation Avulsion will be shown at Myrtle Point Baptist Church next Sunday at 7 30 p m. The House Un American Activities Committee produced it to alert churches to present day Communist activities on the West Coast. It is distributed by the National Association of Evangelical Churches. Pickets from Local 701 of the Engineers Union appeared on Highway 42 this week amid a dispute with the Associated General Contractors. Bridge work at Powers junction was halted while other Highway 42 projects nearby continued, suggesting only the bridge in question faced disruption.

The Coos County Sheriff's Posse hosts the Junior Show-D-0 at Myrtle Point Fairgrounds this weekend with Saturday and Sunday afternoon performances. Sunday at 10 am features the 4 H Senior Horseman Test, a difficult statewide credential, plus a Cowboy Breakfast by the Posse Auxiliary from 7 to 11 am. The event includes a Queen and two princesses from 16 entrants, 40 trophies, a major trophy from the Coos Bay Eagles for outstanding horsemanship, and judges from the Eagles lodge. Harold Schafer leads the Posse with Clell Laird as lieutenant and volunteers handle setup crowd control and show management. Publicity chair Lloyd Mickam notes the show showcases young riders and skill in a two day program starting Sunday morning.
