A reminiscence of pre automobile celebrations with out of town visitors arriving by hacks and wagons. People attended greased pole walks greased pig log rolling and foot races. Speakers spoke on Independence Day then a barbecue and salutes fired from cannons and anvils marked the dawn.
A group of Myrtle Point anglers led by Othal Davenport and Clyde Anderson spent eight days at Ta-Weel Lake in Canada, catching around 200 pounds of rainbow trout. They found Canadian scenery stunning, traveled via Seattle to Chillawack, and endured a 24 hour delay due to dry land slides on the return.
Spenny Ross, Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce chairman, invites all Southern Coos county groups to sponsor a Queen candidate for the Centennial Queen contest. Entries due to Koes at Schroeder Furniture. The event benefits the Community Band, culminating August 14 at the Oaks Pavilion with coronation and cash prizes. Buttons admit to coronation and dance with Red Jordan Orchestra.
Bridge Community Church in Bridge Oregon closes the July 13 termination of its fundraising drive to buy land for a new building. Activities included food sales at Myrtle Point and Bridge, smorgasbord dinner, auctions, choir recitals, and personal contact efforts. A $595 shortfall remains toward the $3,250 goal. funds will be raised to fulfill payment and start construction with youth recreation grounds planned.
Dale Hoffman returns from nine months aboard the U S S Ajax in the Far East and Korea. He recalls the war as “one of those things” and plans to rejoin the ship in California after leave. A ship mascot dog named Wheels, injured on the bridge, received a stainless steel plate and recovered to resume duties aboard the Ajax.
Walter Schroeder reports the South coast 4 H Livestock and Crops Tour in Coos county begins with hog care and barrow class judging at Wayne Babcock farm near Broad Bend. After lunch at Hoff man Wayside park the group examines beef operations at Tom Guerin ranch with two Hereford classes judged. The afternoon moves toward Jack Dean's cranberry bog and gorse control near Bandon. They camp at Floral Lake with activities planned. Friday includes visits to Ralph Cope dairy ranch and two Jersey classes, then Seaview farms for sheep judging. Harry Lindgren will officiate.
Odd Fellows installed officers for the year led by George Hughes and E E Royer with Emmett Hammack and Lyman Rackieff among others. A joint picnic with Coquille lodge is planned at Norway McCloskey grove on Monday August 18 inviting Myrtle Point lodge and friends. Details to follow.
The pioneer real estate firm of E. C. Roberts has moved from the Lobdell building on Spruce Street to the Myrtle Hotel building on Fifth Street. The move will occur July 1. Ed and Allison will greet friends from their new business home.
Arnold Hildebrandt, agricultural instructor at Myrtle Point High School, resigns to accept a position at Dayton Oregon. He has served six years on the faculty and superintendent G Goddard says the resignation is accepted with regret.
L A Dodge of Detroit Michigan was chosen by unanimous vote as the new president of Lions International at the 36th annual convention in Chicago. He succeeds Edgar M Elbert of Maywood Illinois. Dodge is a Mason and resident of 14036 Robson Ave Detroit with two married children Catherine and John.
Robert Y. Gray, 33, of Zaten's Ford store area, vanished after groceries linked to him were found missing in Coquille. His car was located on Maple Street in Myrtle Point by Police Chief Dick Vines, with keys inside. Barklow, a government trapper, was with Gray Thursday. Barklow reportedly left Gray in Sitkum before returning to Myrtle Point. Police say no trace has been found as of 1 a.m. Wednesday.
The city council, at an adjourned meeting last Tuesday, ordered irrigation water use restricted. No shortage exists, yet many irrigate overnight. rules require a 6 pm stop, season fees paid up front, and immediate halt on fire alarm. Citizens are urged to report violators to the police.
One tract offered at the Coos Bay district July timber sale was in Dora, containing 235 M board feet valued at 3406 dollars. D. J. Melton Company of Coquille was the only bidder and purchased the tract, with 90 days for prospectors to bid on remaining properties.
A letter from Ed Sempert describes a packed Lions Club convention, praising the inspiring event and the stadium overflow. He notes GOP convention familiarity and plans to send letters to Chet for the next meeting, closing with regards to Lions and friends.
Grand Encampment of Oregon I O O F plans a Saturday evening ceremony in Coquille to institute a ladies auxiliary encampment. A 19 member Eugene drill team will assist and confer the degree work. The Eugene party has chartered a bus and about 30 Lane County residents are expected. Twenty Rebekahs signed applications to join as charter members.
The 43d Coos County Rebekah convention met Monday in Coquille with 90 at the banquet at Myrtle Hotel. Highlights included an afternoon program, an 8:30 pm initiation, and an Osborne address. New district officers for 1954 were elected, and decorations featured the motto Sail the Seas of Friendship. The next convention will be called by the new president in 1954.
The Myrtle Point High School Alumni Association held its fifth annual picnic at the fair grounds with 25 graduates and families and 4 former instructors in attendance. Speakers recalled early school days and the formation of the local high school, while officers for the coming year were elected and notices to members living outside Coos county were discussed.
The Myrtle Point Lions sponsor Red Cross Junior and Senior life-saving swimming classes at Coquille Community pool starting next Monday at 6 pm. Due to low enrollment, Myrtle Point may join Coquille for the programs. Enrollments are for beginners and intermediate riders for August sessions. register at Schroeder's Furniture, Paul Franzen’s home, Spruce School, or by phone 1731 or 851.
Norman Miles, a painting contractor, fell from a ladder while working at Myrtle Point Used Car Co. He suffered a broken bone in one ankle and a sprain in the other and was taken to Eugene for a bone specialist evaluation.
The Anglers Cafe, a modern new restaurant, opens in Myrtle Point on Spruce Street between 7th and 8th over the food lockers. Mr and Mrs Harold Watzling announce daily hours 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. except Mondays with chef Patelle Byley from Portland.
The La Verne College Choral group will perform at Church of the Brethren on Sunday July 19 at 8 p.m. as part of a Pacific coast tour covering four states and 9000 miles. The ensemble will visit twenty five churches with Ruth Cinngee second soprano Ellenberger first soprano La Verne as home and Doris and Carol Shoemaker from Wenatchee Washington among the members.
