Myrtle Point Lions Club met last Wednesday featuring the preservation of the International Lions emblem and a plaque with flags of eight nations. Charlie Bingham, just back from his third year at Harvard, gave an inspirational talk. A dog and master, guests at the event, drew attention as well.
The Cods Curry Pioneer and Historical association schedules its annual picnic at Norway Grove on Sunday July 18 at 1 00 PM. Miss Lillian Farley Coos County school superintendent will attend a workshop for Oregon county school superintendents at the University of Oregon in July 1924. The event is sponsored by the State Department of Education, the Oregon County School Superintendents Association and the University of Oregon with education personnel and leaders slated to participate.
Myrtle Point Lions hear Charlie Bingham speak on his three years at Harvard University with faith in America. He quips that the American dollar is God’s gift to England and notes his role as Harvard football manager for 1954-55. The club receives an international emblem plaque and a Christian Science Monitor issue praising Lionism.
Davenport and associated herds in Myrtle Point complete 12 month tests under Oregon State College and the American Jersey Cattle Club. The Davennert herd averaged 9411 lbs milk and 547 lbs butterfat per cow. another Davenport Jersey at 8998 lbs milk and 507 lbs butterfat. Herds of 15 Jerseys owned by W R and 14 Jerseys owned by LC participated. Tests conducted at Columbus, Ohio.
The Bellew descendants reunion set for Sunday July 18 at Hoffman Wayside grove near Myrtle Point. A 1 PM potluck dinner precedes a 2 30 PM program. All descendants and families urged to attend.
Portland report says employer committees accused the Union of bad faith bargaining at the first major timber talks since the June strike. Employers state the Portland Coast Columbia District Council never acknowledged the May 14 offer and refuse to renew wage contracts until unions accept the proposal. but individual operators remain willing to meet to renew agreements.
Myrtle Point city council accepts Guy V. Sweet of Seattle bid 82335.45 for library chairs tables and desks and contracts Herolé M. Greppe to provide shelving at 39068.50. Building crews finalize work as sidewalks heating and furnishings progress. occupancy expected by September 1.
Truman Hartley chair of school district No 20 in Broadbent says voters go to polls next Monday to decide a 13000 bond to add a classroom and a teachers work room at the Broadbent elementary school. Polls open 2 to 6 at the schoolhouse.
All former Coos County residents and families are urged to attend an annual picnic next Sunday July 18 at Suffle Lake picnic grounds on South Santiam highway. Floyd Watson secretary notes luncheon served and fray Young and his Crooked Gobblers will perform.
Coos county Young Democrats announce a dinner meeting July 21 at Coquille Community Building at 7 30 pm. The event features major candidates including Joe Carson and Charles Porter with opposition to Harris Ellsworth noted. Tickets are $2 per plate and available in Myrtle Point Powers.
The 43rd annual Coos County Fair adds a cutting horse contest as a new feature. Harold Ciarno, secretary manager, announces plans for top horses from California Washington and Oregon to compete Saturday and Sunday. A $300 purse with an $8 entry fee aims for about $650 prize money. R D McFarlane of Salem will judge the events and other horse judging.
Friends of the Rev Richard J Cochran and his wife, missionaries in Iraq near Nineveh, expect to be in Myrtle Point on July 19 20 or 21 on their way to Medford. Local pastor Dr A Theo Smith urged them to attend this coming Sunday.
The Lutheran Sunday school picnic is planned for July 25 likely at Hoffmans Way side. It will start with a potluck lunch right after the 11 a.m. services. Committee in charge includes Mrs Francis Martinus, Mrs Paul Hammer, and Walde mar Gurney.

Senator Guy Cordon of Oregon was chosen to chair the Interior and Insular Affairs Committee after the death of Senator Hugh Butler. The post increases Cordon's influence on public lands, reclamation, and power marketing in the Pacific Northwest.
