Oregon petition drive to abolish commercial salmon fishing on coastal rivers south of the Columbia completed with 47 000 to 50 000 signatures. West of the Cascades and in Multnomah County the highest totals were recorded, with Taft Kernville and Waldport areas showing strong support. Fundraising totaled under 500 dollars with 150 dollars cash. sponsors invite donations to Save Oregon's Salmon.
Mr and Mrs Kay Petersen and their son Bruce left Thursday for Rawlins Wyoming to visit relatives. They were joined by Mrs Petersen's mother Mrs John Petersen, who had stayed several days at her son's home.
Myrtle Point Rotary Club installed new officers at a Thursday dinner meeting. Am Roush, a local businessman, was named president for the coming year with Ray Harris as vice president Bert Pearson as secretary treasurer and Verne Tain dy and J M Mitch Myers joining the board of directors. Walter Jo Crim served as the outgoing president and received pins. The club meets weekly at the Myrtle Hotel noon.
Myrtle Point Rotary Club installed a new president last Thursday, succeeding Spenny Ross. The business leader, named by club members, will lead the organization as the new head of the Rotary chapter.
E C Barker reports a giant tooth found in a load of Powers gravel. Locals recall legends of a prehistoric monster seen near Powers to 60 years ago. Bob Harrison recalls the creature. the tooth is displayed in The Herald office window.
The Oregon Liquor Control Commission will distribute 2,804,805.49 in July from revenue for the quarter ending June 30. The general fund will receive 2,435,000 with localities sharing 368,805.49 according to parenam. Of the total, 2,500,000 comes from liquor sales and 304,806.49 from malt beverage and table wine taxes.
Voters in Myrtle Point will decide July 20 whether to approve $1924.23 in excess of the six percent limit to fund library bonds and near term taxes. A budget hearing is set for July 19 in the council chambers with polling at city hall from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The 1954 55 budget totals $50 679 58 with estimated receipts of $27 390 and $25 789 58 to be raised by taxation including bond principal and interest.
A Myrtle Point reader urges support for the Ground Observer Corps arguing it complements radar and strengthens defense. The letter notes 348 073 volunteers nationwide and invites locals to join the July meeting at the Scout building, calling for two hours weekly to help avert another Pearl Harbor scenario.
Clifford M Bonnicksen age 56 died Monday evening at his Coquille home from a heart attack. Funeral planned Thursday at Schroeder Funeral Home Coquille with Sunset Cemetery Coos Bay interment. He and his family recently moved from Broadbent where he ran a store for 10 years before selling in May. Surviving are his widow Jewell two sons Gene Oregon City and Howard San Mateo five grandchildren and five sisters Maggie Simmons Karl Cross Coquille Annie Jacobsen Coos Bay E Tonini Ferndale and Dora Jorgensen Eu parla.
One of Coos county’s oldest pioneers Calvin Gant died Monday at Masthoepital. He would have turned 95 on Sept 26 and lived in the county 72 years since arriving in 1882 to farm and serve his Brethren church. Funeral services set for 2 p.m. Thursday at Schroeder Funeral Home Point with Rev Leo Miller officiating. Interment at Norway cemetery. Survivors include two daughters Mrs Lawrence Jennings Remote and Mrs Albert Britton Denmark, several grandchildren and great grandchildren and other relatives.
Major Stewart R Dayton has been stationed in Korea for fourteen months and has arrived in San Francisco en route to Myrtle Point for a thirty day leave before new duties. He contributed to a Christmas clothing drive for Korean war orphans and will speak to the Coos Bay Rotary Club about the aid program.
Maude Adeline Haga 74 died at Mast hospital Monday after a long illness. Born in Bandon November 5, 1880, she lived in Bandon most of life, moved to Myrtle Point in 1944 after her husband’s death. Funeral services were held at Schroeder Funeral Home with burial in ICOF cemetery, Bandon. Survived by son Orville Haga of Eureka California, brother Ralph Leneve of Bandon, three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Mr and Mrs Oran Shull along with Cathe and Gary joined Mrs Shulls parents and other relatives and friends for a weekend visit in Coos Bay.
Veterans of Coquille Post No. 36 and Myrtle Point Post No. 38 held a joint installation of officers at the Myrtle Point Hotel Friday evening. District No. 10 Commander Arthur Chapman of North Bend served as installing officer, with past commanders from both posts present.
Mr and Mrs Herman Tedsen of Norway have sold their entire holdings in Norway to Mr and Mrs Fred Schmidt. The Schmidt purchase includes the Norway store service station post office and other property with transfer on January 1 1955. The Tedsens will move to Santa Rosa California former home of Mrs Tedsen. The seller known locally as The Mayor has served 35 years in Norway including 25 years as postmaster.
Sunday night at the Powers Open Bible church four students from Bible Institute in Eugene bring a Hammond organ for a program of musical selections and preaching. The service starts at 7 45 p m Sunday and Monday features an all musical program at 7 45 p m.
