Fashion authorities link the Ivy League look and broader hemline trends to political eras and wars. Hemlines rose before World War I and again after World War II, with cycles suggesting trends every ten years and revolutions about 30 years. Paris prognosticators foresee a return to floor-length hemlines, with little leg and no war.
PP&L workers achieved a strong safety record for the six months ending June 30 1958 earning an Emergency Reduction Award from the Electric Institute. The rate fell to 1.56 injuries per million man hours from a system-wide 2.37 for the six months and 84.6 percent below the three year average.
Coos County Fair boards announce The Great Alexander as a major attraction with parts in several acts from August 14 to 17. The lineup includes Tom Garey, Sherry with a trained mule, Tyler's German Band, and a cowboy breakfast at the city park. Harold Clarno says rodeo stars like War Paint will appear in future professional events.
Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce members gather at the 4-H building on the fair grounds for a meeting attended by 28 members. They inspect newly installed livestock and truck scales funded by the chamber and locals, with a lamb sale set for next Monday expecting about 3,000 lambs. The State Highway Commission appears to delay Highway 42 despite promises of 60000 for improvements. Residents note bids planned July 10 include unrelated Coos County projects such as grading on the relocated Oregon Coast Highway at Bullards Bridge and a 120 foot concrete Fahy Avenue bridge in Bandon. Delays threaten the North Fork bridge fill and other safety improvements.
Local merchants announce Saturday surprise specials as part of a promotional campaign. Shoppers are encouraged to visit participating stores including Sempert's Rexall Drug Store Getchell and Hermanns Knife Bros Jewelers Roush Parts and Service and more for unknown offers.
On Wednesday July 16 1958 the City of Myrtle Point will offer free tuberculosis testing to detect and prevent disease. Mayor Elden Brodie proclaims residents should participate to aid public health and history notes a statewide high incidence in Oregon.
Coos County's second annual Feeder Lamb Sale will be held at the Myrtle Point fairgrounds next Monday at 2 30 p m. The Coos County Livestock Association sponsors the event aiming to give buyers uniform lots for pasture and dry lot feeding. Bruce Brubs will act as auctioneer with about 2500 lambs available.
The Coos County Chamber of Commerce led by Secretary-Manager B L Higgins released a comprehensive industrial potential survey of Coos County. Five hundred brochures mailed nationwide detail transportation, finance, utilities, education, ports, minerals, taxes and a large 14 by 20 inch map showing towns rivers and timber resources. The publication aims to promote industrial, agricultural, recreational and commercial interests and the county’s future development.

The Public Utilities Commission rejected Greyhound Bus Company’s petition to discontinue service between Myrtle Point and Winston along Highway 42 and Highway 20. Public hearings at Myrtle Point and Newport drew strong opposition, prompting withdrawal of the petition. The Myrtle Point depot moved to the Pastime on Spruce Street, three blocks north of Security Bank. Mr and Mrs Otto Koppe and others traveled south along the coast on a three day trip.
A driver’s license examiner will be on duty in Myrtle Point at city hall on Wednesday July 16 1958 from 9 p m to 4 p m according to an announcement from the Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles.
The Church of the Brethren announces no services in town on Sunday July 13. Sunday school and worship will be at Myrtlewood with the Family Retreat from Friday 3 p.m. to Sunday. Junior group camp privileges are noted and Senior High camp runs July 13 to 19.
The city council tabled the petition for sewer work on E Maple Street awaiting further reference. The council directed City Attorney Frank Melidrum to prepare the necessary ordinance to comply with Rudy de Rochek's annexation petition.
In Michigan's Sixth District Rep Charles E Chamberlain reports 77 percent favor urging unions and management to hold wage and price talks. The poll shows many workers want financial transparency and secret ballots, and distrust leaders who they feel do not represent rank and file.
J J Geany and Frank Rema, president and vice president of the Coos County Agricultural Tax Association, left Coquille early Monday to represent Coos County at a timber tax hearing before the State Tax Commission in Salem. The session was reported to run through the day with officials noting expected attendance and topics under discussion.
