Bandon Plans Fish Fry and Fireworks Celebration

A Saturday festival in Bandon features a breakfast 6 to 10 am at the city park, raft races at Bulllards Beach State Park starting 8 am, 30 minute airplane rides by Columbia Marine Inc, Wish Fry fish served 11 am to 2 pm, an old-fashioned park band concert, a doubleheader baseball game at the high school field, and fireworks from the north jetty visible along the beach loop.

Fatal Highway 42 Crash Claims Balcom Family

Gerald G Balcom 24 and his young daughter Judy Mae die in a two car crash on Highway 42 two miles east of Remote. Injured are wife Mrs Balcom 20 and two other children Teresa and another boy. May Sangster 44 is in critical condition and Andrew Sangster 37 hurt but stable. The second vehicle’s operator Glen Fisher 23 and passenger Carl Wallen 21 were treated and released. The Balcom car veered into the east lane and rolled, while the other car stopped after the collision.

County Fair Aims for 1908 Pair Championship

Local notes indicate the 1908 Coos County Pair Championship finals will be staged at the Myrtle Point Fairgrounds this weekend. Contestants include Linda Bartley Kathy Burness and Ann Curran with eliminations beginning Saturday morning. Spectators are invited and events span along Spruce Street and Pen Street with finals scheduled Sunday breakfast time admission set at $1.00.

New Logger's Show Adds Log Chop Event at Myrtle Point

At the Coos County Fair Myrtle Point a log chopping contest will join the Logger's Showdown. A 14 inch red alder log will be split on the log stand with timing ending when the cut reaches ground. Top prize is 100 dollars and traveling trophy to be kept until next year's event. Second and third prizes are 75 and 50 dollars. A July 7 selection meeting at the Myrtle Point Fairgrounds will choose the six finalists for the main show on August 13. Judges include Bernie DeGross Mike Ray Boyd Arnot Jr and Dick Mase.
