Albany report that former Governor Elmo Smith will serve as state chairman for Mark Hatfield's bid for the Oregon Republican gubernatorial nomination. Smith, a former Senate president and noted candidate, praises Hatfield's qualifications and readiness to tackle state government issues.
Dr. O W Schalm of the University of California will give an illustrated lecture on mastitis control at the annual dairymen's meeting in the Coquille Grange Hall on February 5. Governor Robert D Holmes and State Rep Clarence Barton will also appear in the afternoon program.

Forest supervisor H C Obye says a recent report about 3360,000 to 400,000 dollars for a Powers Agness access road in 1959 was erroneous. Allocation of funds requires public hearings and final approval rests with the National Congress. hearings will be scheduled with ample notice for interested parties.
Eight more informal discussion groups were organized under the county and statewide Great Decisions 1955 program which began with the topic What Challenges and Opportunities for the U.S in 1958. Preston Willis announced the plan as organizing chairman for Coos County. The program will study eight foreign policy issues chosen by experts as crucial for next year.

Gary Morris and Russ Holiman Tournament and Handicap. Dr. Robert Ley Membership. Leroy Robinson Transportation. Floyd Hall Finance and Greens. Austin Dodge Entertainment. George Hall Publicity. Plans call for weekly tournaments to begin soon with details to follow.
Oregon's 1948 Driver's Manual has a new edition distributed by the Department of Motor Vehicles. The cover and driver licenses bear the reminder Thou Shalt Not Kill. The manual explains the driver improvement program and the financial responsibility law. Officials urge drivers to study it for traffic rules and regulations reflecting recent legislation.
Countrywide effort sees Ernest Payne Coquille and Coos Bay figures join Myrtle Point BPW Club and Coquille Testmasters Club to host informal weekly discussions. Groups plan eight meetings on crucial issues and aim to finalize organization by January 31 with Ruth Neil and Alice Gauntlett among organizers in the Coquille Decisions Group.
The high school band and chorus perform a swing program in the Myrtle Crest gym at 8 p m. Admission is free with punch and popcorn served. The band will play selections including On The Road Again, Holiday For Winds, and Tango Triste while the chorus sings Mood Indigo and The Sophisticated Lady. A dance band offers three numbers.
A disconnected stove pipe in the Al Baker apartments at 632 4th street sparked a fire around 8 30 last Saturday evening. Fire Chief Mitch Myers says the blaze caused between 400 and 500 dollars in damage, with Mr and Mrs Linn Flashman as residents. Volunteer firefighters had to cut away part of a partition to reach the flames, and insurance fully covered the damage with repairs underway Monday morning.
Ivan Cribbins of Bridge takes over the lease of Mom's Drive-In from Harold St Clair as of Monday January 13. Mrs I G Bingham and Charlie Bingham visited Myrtle Point. Charlie serves in the army at Fort Knox and plans postgraduate study at Harvard.
