The Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce votes to join state efforts to promote a Rogue River Highway and an advertising pamphlet. George R B Dickinson named to coordinate cross chamber efforts. honorary memberships extended to County Judge Levid F Thompson and local ministers.
Final steps in Marshfield between Hub store owners and Myrtle Hotel Company yield a three year lease for the vacant room in the Myrtle Hotel building, one door west of Harlocker Pharmacy. The move is expected to expand stock and services.
A dedication service at the Full Gospel Pentecostal Church on Willow Street featured pastors led by Rev. Henry Carver with Evangelist D H McLaughtin and Rev Samuel Swanson of Seattle among speakers. The frame building seats 250, includes a basement prayer room and Sunday schools, and the Carvers reside in the rear parsonage as services continue nightly at 7 30.
Myrtle Point Post No. 38 of the American Legion held a regular meeting with a pot luck dinner. A $600 building fund was created for a cooperative community building project. Commander Harry Brownson named a committee to seek civic support and a special meeting is planned for February lith at the Myrtle Hotel to discuss cooperation. The post backed two state senate bills for tax and licensing exemptions for veterans and arranged with Dr. R. Harrison Mast for local medical examinations, avoiding Coquille visits.
Signs posted at all roads into three abortion control areas in Coos and Curry counties warn that bringing untested cattle into these zones is a sanitary violation. Officials note progress in eradicating the disease, with areas at Coos Bay Bandon and Brewster valley and possible expansion within 30 days.
The Presbyterian church will have its Sunday evening service led by the church youth. Cecil Barker conducts the opening, the Norris sisters play a piano duet, Herbert Strong recites on Christian Endeavor work, and Billy Lund offers a violin solo with Mrs. Neideigh. All are invited, especially youths without other plans.
Frank A. Rowe of Wood Products Co. proposed organizing a company to operate a box factory and burl plant in Myrtle Point. The chamber of commerce voted unanimously to support the move, while approving a $100 street lighting bill and a $160 library budget item. The 1931 budget was set and a larger membership is anticipated.
A letter from R C Dement to P O Lund describes harsh cold in Los Angeles and his feeling of invisibility among crowds. Dement, Coos county's oldest pioneer, visits a daughter there. Also noted, Mr and Mrs W A LeGore of Bandon visited Floyd E Summers from Bandon last Sunday.
Steve Reed ranch at Twin Oaks reports two dogs shot after killing nine sheep. Reed caught the animals in the act and who shot two of them. Most of the sheep were heavy with lamb when the incident occurred.
Marshfield High School seeks to extend its perfect record by visiting Myrtle Point Friday night in a top rival match billed as the season’s classic. A pep rally and bonfire are planned at Maple and Eigna Street with speeches urging a local upset. Earlier, Myrtle Point defeated Port Orford and won a second-team game 8 to 4 against Marshfield.
Coos county grange agricultural committees plus Oregon State Grange officials including Fred A. Golf will gather at Coquille City Hall on February 3 to shape a practical agricultural program for the coming year. Henry Gustafsen George Jenkins and Extension Service cooperation are noted as attendees. A baby girl was born last week to Mr and Mrs Henry Carver, now with Mrs Carver's parents in Coquille.
Senate bill 40 repeals the 1929 meat transportation and sale law allowing bonafide producers and dealers to kill transport and sell without tags or licenses while itinerant peddlers must obtain tags. House bill 4 requires identification tags for transport or sale. An old age pension bill, backed by Senators Woodward Hall and Representatives Anderson Mott Bronaugh Lee Schaupp, lists age and residency requirements with governor Meter backing.
E M Wilkins, already operating a mill on Mathene creek, is building a new mill near the old creamery site south of the Southern Pacific depot to saw battery stock. The facility will employ three or four men at start, replacing prior shipments to other places for sawing.
On February 12 at city hall the Woman's club presented two solo performances by Mrs. Merwin Moller and a piano piece by the Latham sisters. Ruth Woodward spoke on the scholarship loan fund, and Elizabeth Dement shared impressions from a press conference trip to Kaugese. The meeting set February 13 for Oregon products week with decorating and shopping prompts.
A large Myrtle Camp R A delegation attended Laurel Camp in Coquille for the Rainbow Rally third in the series. After the opening, members enjoyed stunts recitations and a substantial lunch provided by Coquille Neighbors. The next meeting is set for North Bend in late March.
The Rebekahs met Monday evening in Lundy hall for social time with refreshments. New officers for the coming year were installed including Velma Johnson Past N.G. Irene Hatfield N.G. Mr. and Mrs. John Carver purchase the Coffee Cup ranch seven acres near Roseburg on the highway. They plan a modern home and intend to operate a fox farm on the property.
