City leaders weigh aid for a proposed Myrtle Point community building with input from the American Legion. The council debates library funding, tax issues, and an itemized needs list, while approving a library salary and various town bills.
Prominent citizens endorse building a Myrtle Point community hall. Ex service Legion members report broad support from the C C F, K of P, Woman's Club, Grange, city library board, and local business leaders. They seek unified fundraising and plan to invest their 9600 treasury in the new building corporation.
Many trees and plants have been in bloom for over a week including wild plum currants and strawberries. Yesterdays dispatches report New England remains in the ice bound winter with temperatures as low as 38 degrees below zero in some areas. pruning of trees and garden work has continued for a week or more.
Mr and Mrs E J Schneider, Bob Blankenship, and E I Vinton left early this morning for Curry County to begin surveying work on mining properties. Four men will be employed on the project.
The citys spring water source ran dry early in the week forcing the plant to switch to river water. Residents note a slight chlorine taste. Typically the spring supply lasts into late spring, but this dry year shortened the availability.
Mike Morrison established camp in the Lawson Cypress property near Gaylord this week and will log cedar. His operations began with a force of 20 men. Morrison is a well known logger in the region, but this marks his first major activity in over a year.
The Cops and Curry Fair Association stockholders are summoned to meet at 2 o'clock Saturday in the city hall Myrtle Point to elect officers and conduct other business. The secretary will determine share ownership on roll call. Each share of stock grants one vote.
On Monday the 16th, the Cops and Curry grange council will meet at the courthouse in Coquille. Grangers interested are invited to attend.
The Hawkes Bay quake death toll grows as rescuers search Napier Hastings and Taradale. Reported counts include Napier about 300 dead Hastings 80 to 100 Taradale 31 with total estimates between 411 and 481.

Union oil agent Carlton was transferred to Glendale Oregon weeks ago. He visited over the weekend and moved his family to the town. The company built a new house for their agent and Carleo says he likes the work, town, and people.
Thieves broke into the county barn in the town's south end on Saturday night. They gained entry by piling boxes to reach a window, stole gas from two cars leaving the rest untouched. A few tools were taken as well.
Salem notes bills on abolishing the public service commission replacing with a director system, merging state police departments, licensing oleo and dairy substitutes, grading butter, and a 10 cent tax on substitutes. Utilities allow competition after repealing certificate notices. Intangibles tax court denial sparks new tax bills. Senator Miller from Josephine County advocates scenery protection legislation.
Miss Annie Porter of New Zealand will lecture at Union High School auditorium about her film The Bottom of the World on Wednesday morning February 13 at nine o clock. Tickets are 10 cents for students and 26 cents for adults, and the talk promises travel insight and first hand information from a long way away.
The late Mrs Rea Johnston of Powers died in Portland after a brief illness while visiting there. Her funeral arrangements are in Powers where she lived with husband and parents. She formerly was Bessie Spade and is survived by a sister and a brother in Oregon. Monroe Lewis of Western Newspaper Union, longtime Oregon Washington and British Columbia correspondent, visited The Herald office on Monday for the last time before his transfer to Texas.
State Master Chas. C. Hulet will speak on 4 H club work on KOAC at 7 30 February 9. The Oregon State Grange master outlines his view while other Grange leaders appear from Corvallis for the Lecturers' school.
The third annual Oregon products dinner, a library benefit, will be held Friday February 13 at 6:30 PM in Schroeder's hall Myrtle Point. The event features meals prepared by Myrtle Point's top cooks and aims to support the local library. friends of the library are urged to save the date.
Mr and Mrs Paul Breuer hosted guarantors to discuss the next Chautauqua. Henry Schroeder was elected president with E C Barker vice president and George Mickinson secretary treasurer. Plans include two one act plays with local talent and music probably March 6.
A Chrysler roadster driven by John Anderson ran off the highway near the county line one night early this week and was badly damaged. It was towed to Pearce garage for repairs.
Salem Oké Feb 4 The Rogue River closing bill to bar commercial fishing passed its house on Tuesday with a 44 to 16 vote after two hours of debate. The governor is expected to sign, as he favored the measure earlier. The initiative proposal was defeated by voters in November by over 8,000 votes.
The Sons and Daughters of the Civil War veterans from Marshfield visited Hiram Hatcher at his home on Sunday. They presented him a magazine stand in recognition of their friendship, with 8. S. Endicott and Mrs. H. H. Brownson also in attendance. Endicott and Hatcher are Myrtle Point's last surviving Civil War veterans.
Governor transmits special messages backing two public utility measures and a Water Conservation bill. The package aims to create a three member Water Power Commission, authorize hydroelectric development, regulate licenses, and outline state control of water resources while limiting state payments and project seizures.
