In this reflective column the author extols pussy willows as early harbingers of spring. The buds appear bravely amid frost and snow, lifting spirits, signaling renewal, and embodying faith in warmer days to come despite ongoing winter.
At Myrtle Point the Lions club held a whimsical meeting marked by a whispering Ed Roberts and a playful dispute over a gas buggy crash. The group voted to settle the matter with a dollar donation to the March of Dimes, suspending rules to raise fines and conclude the incident.
Coos County assessor C G Caughell uses aerial photography to locate log decks mills and other log stockpiles for the tax rolls. Postmaster Don Estes says the 600 mile flight yields 150 to 200 pictures per year. An airplane flown by William McClure conducts the work. yearly cost under 400 dollars.
Myrtle Point Chamber members urge Sitkum road improvement from Dora to Myrtle Point. They will petition Coos County Court with a secretary drafted letter, citing available funds and urgency. The meeting also discussed a County Agriculture Tax reassessment and a blood drive for polio in Coquille January 28.
Coos county School Superintendent Miss Lillian Farley notes Etalka a rural school on Up Powers Way with 11 enrolled students all boys since September nine boys and one girl started, the girl moved away and two more boys joined. The piece laments lack of girls and questions drum majorettes and yell leaders.
The Myrtle Point American Legion leads with a $260 donation to the Community Building project and purchases the first $25 building bond. Lions and Active clubs back the bond, with Al Wyld Jr. shown as laymaster who bought the first $28 bond alongside an architectural drawing of the proposed building.
The Coos county Health department with the Coos Curry Medical Society and local health groups will urge all adults to obtain chest X rays between February 15 and April 26. Led by Judge James Harrison and Dr. L B Gould, the effort aims to detect tuberculosis, boasting a goal of over 20,000 X rays in Coos county. A January 18 meeting was postponed due to high water and Myrtle Point dates remain undecided.
Rotary members favor building a Myrtle Park community center as a joint project with Active and Lions clubs. Harold Belloni and a Herald reporter outlined plans and financing, urging individual Rotarians to support fundraising for the project.
Myrtle Point Bucks coach Vernon Shields brings SW Oregon league top quintets to town for two charity games against Evans Products Co. of Coos Bay and the Coquille Indiana. Proceeds go to the March of Dimes to aid polio fight with tickets at 1.00 for adults and 50 cents for students and children. Games start next Wednesday at 7:00 in the new junior high gym. Sponsored by Dale and Ann Wade.
Dick Adams of Myrtle Point announces a new Coquille Valley club forming an anti-squirreling group. The relay style reliability run covers 70 to 100 miles with a secret course map revealed at start. Entry costs 100 dollars. the driver closest to the fastest legal time wins half the fees.
The Bridge 4-H club held its monthly social at the grange hall on Jan 10. Rae McKinley served as president as officers of the Beef club conducted the meeting. The group voted to join the National Rat and Mouse Centre Achievement campaign to urge clubs to help clear communities of pests. Mr and Mrs Andrew Waterman organized the games and refreshments.
Paul Collins research director of the Oregon Education Association will be entertained by the upper Coquille Valley Teachers association at its next regular meeting Monday January 26 at 4 00 in the Myrtle Point Union high school library room. He will discuss current problems facing the teaching profession and answer questions from the group.
Leland Peterson was re elected president of the Coos County Livestock Association at a meeting held in Coquille with officers named Tom Guerin Jr secretary and board members J J Morris Wallace Dement Frank Rema and D R Curry. Howard Leatherman of Fairview is president of the Western Oregon group this year. A January 3 meeting highlighted a state need conference report from Frank Rema emphasizing a stronger predatory control program to curb tansy ragwort, which sheep once controlled but now are outnumbered by pests.
The Milk Producers association of Central California based in Modesto announced that all receipts of manufacturing grade milk after Jan 1 1953 will be paid on a hundred weight basis using fat content. Manager E L Wetmore noted the change came after talks with Dave A Clarke of the Giannini Foundation as an alternative to prior pricing methods.
A severe flood along the Coquille River and its tributaries caused extensive damage reaching hundreds of thousands of dollars. Ten inches of floodwaters inundated first floors in many homes while power boats aided rescues. No lives were lost but evacuations disrupted schooling and mail service. Continued on Page Four.
Myrtle Point Lions Club hosts Bobcat football players at an annual banquet on February 4 honoring the high school team despite a tough season. The gathering also covers a trap shoot benefit, Ladies Night planning, a Kiddies Christmas party recap, and March of Dimes fundraising from meeting fines.
Odd Fellows and Rebekahs hosted a crowded Wednesday installation at the hall for the coming year. Dignitaries from Coquille Bandon Myrtle Point Powers attended with officers installed and imprest talks from guests about education and the United Nations pilgrimage.
