Ford founder Mason and the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis joined forces with American Legion sponsors to place Ford gum machines across the country. Dimes go to March of Dimes, pennies to Legion welfare work, with labels urging support during the campaign. Legion airmen Frank Henry and Bill Downing oversee the gym committee in the local area.
Aeronaves de Mexico carried 65 passengers on a pre-inaugural nonstop to New York, ending the trip in 5 hours 34 minutes. The event marked the first Mexican flag carrier landing in New York, with Captain Agraham Carrasco J guiding the Bristol Britannia to Idlewild.
Verlin Hermann of Powers was elected president of the Coos County Chamber of Commerce at a directors meeting in Coquille. Other officers include Robert March as vice president and Alan M. Lambert as treasurer. B L Higgins reappointed secretary. The organization aims to outline this year’s program at the January 21 meeting in Coquille.
Housewives for 42 plan a Thursday trip to Portland to meet the state Highway Commission at 11:00 a.m. Friday in the Imperial hotel Queens room to press for an improvement project. They will supply their own transport and hotel, urge telegrams to the commission, and report recent donations to aid administration costs.
Knife Bros Jewelers is now owned solely by Willard Bill Knife as of January 1. Former partner Arlie Knife sold his interests and moves with family to Tuscon Arizona. The store will be redecorated and receive new stock.
More than 150 turned out Monday at the Coquille Valley Country Club for the Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce annual Kin euct. Pacific Power & Light’s Louis Growney urged community leaders to invite new industry, stressing growth hinges on local vision and effort. Verlin Hermann as toastmaster praised the chamber and noted the active Southern Oregon chapter, with past presidents Tom O’Dwyer Elton Schroeder and Eric Saukkonen in attendance.
Myrtle Point residents Mrs Robert Belloni and Mrs Bill Downing are named Coos County chair and co chair for the Arthritis and Rheumatism Foundation statewide education and membership drive proclaimed by Governor Holmes. A coffee hour at 10:00 am January 20 will explain the foundation's work, with KOIN TV airing Arthritis Reports at the same hour.
Word from Myrtle Point says Jack Ells president of Pyramid Block Co. is nominated for first vice president of the Oregon Concrete Masonry Association headquartered in Eugene. Carl Smithwick of Portland is nominated for president. Complete officer nominations will be presented at the annual meeting in Eugene January 17 and 18.
At the Broadbent Grange meeting on Saturday January 4 with Master Rayarrone presiding seven candidates received the obligation for membership. The new members listed are Mr and Mrs Thomas Forrest Mr and Mrs Pete Blanck Mr and Mrs Al Robinson and Ricky Mor Refreshments were served to five members after the meeting.
Coos County Sheriff Chas Strawn announces his bid for re election on the Democratic ticket. He cites thirteen years in law enforcement and a record of reducing vice and expanding civil work while warning of a stormy campaign and political opposition aimed at his administration.
Coquille Myrtle Point golfers form nominating committee to reorganize The Quille Valley Golf Club. A nine member tentative board will be finalized at the January 20 meeting at 8 PM in the club house. New management pledges a pro shop snack bar rest room and welcoming facilities for women and youths with plans for weekly tournaments.
Justice Randall B. Kester declares his run for a seat on the Oregon Supreme Court from the State House in Salem. Kester has served on the court since January 2, 107.
