Dr James Millar spoke on “Vitamins for Our Democracy” at a Tuesday meeting after a potluck in the social hall. Coos county schools superintendent Mrs Martha Purdy introduced him to about 75 attendees followed by musical interludes from Bobby Burns and Bersie Couden with Mrs Burns at piano.
Mrs. Mary Burns of Coquille marked her ninety first birthday with a family dimmer at her daughter Cora Steele’s Myrtle Point home. Born in Ontario Canada in 1851 she moved to the United States as a girl and became naturalized. Her son Bobby Burns attended the dinner as part of a day that included a potluck and inter church fellowship at the Presbyterian church.
Norman District Attorney James A. Norman announces weekly Tuesday afternoon office visits at the Coquille courthouse to aid residents in southern Coos County. Citizens may also reach him by phone at Coquille 88 to discuss county legal matters.
POWERS January 20 Power shivered through a string of frigid days the coldest since 1932 with readings near seven degrees at the Ranger station and 14 above zero at night. Swans were spotted in town near I. King ranch as storms blocked open water in central Oregon. City officials reshaped library and civic posts and planned a March of Dimes drive amid street improvements and club gatherings.
Clarence Barton, attorney and proprietor of The Tithe Co., spoke to the Myrtle Lions Club at the Myrtle Hotel banquet room last week. He traced the history of communism from its origins through Stalin and Trotsky, noting attempts to gain global influence and influence in American institutions through labor and education. He cited investigations by the Un American Activities Committee and incidents during the war, warning of plots to paralyze industry and undermine the United States. Continued on Page Four.
Last week records show boys outnumber girls by three to one with only one girl born during the period. Notable births include a girl born January 7 to Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Whobrey Broadbent and several boys born to families in Myrtle Point Langlais Boone Ford and Coquille.
Mr and Mrs Austin Dodge and Mr and Mrs Theodore Chates returned to Myrtle Point after a 12 day automobile trip in California. They attended the Rose Bowl game in Pasadena and saw the Rose Festival and Fox Studios filming. They stayed at the Ambassador Hotel and met movie stars while in Los Angeles and Pasadena. The trip combined business and pleasure with visits to relatives and partners in the south.
Local residents describe an atypical winter as snow and ice grip the region. Citizens struggle with frozen pipes and disruptions while staying indoors beside warm fires during the cold spell.
Leatherman was named head of Livestock Men and reelected as vice president. Officers include Mrs. Leona Bryant of Bridge secretary presenter Howard Celdiren of Powers and Sam Dement of Myrtle Point as director. Dement chairs the livestock committee and leads a discussion on livestock management and control of tansy ragwort now a pest.
The Bridge Grange installed its officers led by Master Powell Lancaster and Overseer Henry Brown for the new year. Deputy state master Henry Gustafson and regalia marshal Mrs Walter Leeling presided. Pomona Grange planning a visit. meeting set for January 15 with all-day events and a potluck lunch.
Nancy Candis McChesney died Monday afternoon at the home of her daughter Mrs Elbert Floyd Hall in Albany where she had lived for nearly three years. Born February 15 1900 near Zionsville Indiana she traveled with her parents to the plains in a covered wagon. Funeral services will be at 2 PM Thursday at Riverside Cemetery Albany with Fisher Funeral Home in charge.
After attending the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Mrs Bell bought a souvenir corsage but border guards refused to allow her to take it aboard. The Bells, returning from Myrtle Point, faced a desert bouquet setback on their 2760 mile trip. They visited Mr Bell’s birthplace and old friends amid New Mexico snow storms.
In the fifth week of the derby, Chas. Gaeelin of Co Shoeeaene Wee af Bread won first with a 13 lb steelhead. Other competitors include Paul Stibitz Myrtle Point 11 lb and a 18 lb 11 oz catch, Art Smith Powers 9 lb 14 oz, Ralph Burch Myrtle Point 9 lb 6 oz, D A Speck Myrtle Point 8 lb 14 oz, Lida Hagadorn Bridge Route 7 lb 14 oz, and Bill McCracken Myrtle Point 2 lb 8.44 oz, whose small fish contends for smallest derby entry.
More than 200 people attended a Wednesday open house and dance for the town's new business addition in Myrtle Point. John and Bill Dayton organized the event with music by Johnny Dayton and his five piece orchestra. Bouquets from local firms and individuals decorated the event while Stene doughnuts catered the affair.
District voters in Myrtle Point and Norway approve a plan to unite school systems. Executive superintendent Paul Franzen says the elementary district may face reversal if county officials review the delegates' action.
The Myrtle Beint' Migh acheel alumni from the 1948 class held their first reunion on Degesber 28 at the Coquille Valley Counter club. Morris Harvey guided the program as master of ceremonies, with each member recounting post graduation activities.
