At the January Oregon State Game Commission meeting a Coos county sportsmen group will present a request to close the Coquille river to commercial fishing. The move is expected to gain broad support among meat sportsmen and receive strong backing.
Myrtle Point High School hosts Roseburg in a tight contest with Myrtle Point leading from the first quarter. Key scorers include Rick Bingham and Marvy Hammack for the Bobcats while Daryl Blanck tops Roseburg. Final score 91-88 as Myrtle Point preserves the advantage through rough play and strong defense.

Myrtle Point greets its first 1949 baby, Caralyn Rae Boggan, a 7 lb 8 oz daughter of Eugene and Beggan. She wins the New Year baby honor and a local tri-city derby, amid Coos County baby arrivals including Coquille and Bandana, with 276 births at Mast hospital last year.

W. W. Rubin of Powers won first prize for the fourth week, taking a 17 jewel watch. Clacie Maat of Myrtle Point placed second with a 9 1/2 inch steelhead, and Larry Lawrence of Powers won third with a 5 1/2 lb steelhead. El McCracken of Myrtle Point had the smallest Steelhead this week, 2 lb 8 3/4 oz, while Merl Lund of Broadbent had the smallest in week four at 3 lb 4 oz. The derby continues through Feb 1 with prizes available at The Herald office and anglers urged to enter. Water is reported right and fishing excellent.
Chas. McWilliams, 66, died after a heart attack at Glenn McCain saw mill in Bridge about neen Meadsay. He was rushed to Mast hospital by ambulance and pronounced dead on arrival. Body to be taken to Portland for burial beside his wife. long-time Bridge resident.
Dr Theodore Smith arrives in Myrtle Point to lead the local Presbyterian church after serving in Newberg and Kalamath Falls Oregon He will conduct Sunday services with Sunday school at 10 and preaching at 11 am Joined by his wife the new pastor is warmly welcomed by church members and friends for Sunday greetings.
The Myrtle Point Saddle Club announces its annual banquet and business meeting will be held January 15. Members are advised preparations may be made in advance.
Rev Wilmer A Briggs of the Methodist church hunted Monday afternoon along the river and returned with a limit of wild ducks. He said he could have reached ten if the limit were higher and hinted at future Steelhead exploits in local contest.
The Coos County Livestock Association will hold its annual meeting at the Myrtle Point American Legion hall next Saturday starting at 10 08 a m A potluck lunch is planned The program includes officer elections a creditable review of the Agricultural Planning Conference livestock report with recommendations to boost profits a discussion on range practices under the Conservation program and government trapping reports Oregon State College Extension Livestock Specialist Harry Lindgren is expected to attend Delegates will be chosen to represent Coos County on Western Oregon Livestock Association committees at Gearhart.
The Myrtle Point Church of the Brethren hosts visiting ministers from Portland Albany Weston Mabel Eugene Springfield Grants Pass Medford and Klamath Falls for a three day program of fellowship worship and discussion. A basket dinner is planned Wednesday and the event coincides with the district business meeting in Grants Pass January 18 16.
Dr James Miller, international lecturer, will be guest speaker at a fellowship dinner and will also address rotaries in Coos Bay North Bend Coquille and Myrtle Point. He is scheduled to speak at the local high school in the afternoon.
Weyerhaeuser Co. purchased 960 acres in Coos County from J K and Ethel E. Elder for 213000 with 234.90 in documentary stamps. The land spans sections 32 22 and 26 in townships 27 25 south ranges 9 10 west along Bummett creek and south Coos river near Coquille. The deal includes old growth and peeler logs. A second deed shows title transfer to the Elders from Vancouver Plywood and Veneer Co. on December 14.
The Oddfellows and Rebekah lodges in Myrtle Point announce a joint officers installation at the Grange hall on Wednesday evening January 12 starting at 8 p m. The public is invited to attend. final arrangements were set at the latest lodge meeting.
Milton, 17, attended a Friday service at Myrtle Point Assembly of God and died after collapsing in his car near a friend’s home. Police feared foul play as doctors prepared a postmortem to confirm diagnosis. Funeral held at Schroeder Funeral Home with burial at Sunset Cemetery. Survived by parents Elmer and anonymous mother, a brother Elmer Milton Jr., 20, a sister Betty Jane, 6, and grandparents Mr and Mrs William Hedgers of Toledo Washington.
