The first indoor skeet shoot is scheduled at the fair grounds building this Friday. Members from Coos Bay will visit to join local enthusiasts. A trap shoot is planned for January 28 starting at 10 am and continuing until dark. A January 14 trap shoot at Reedsport will include sportsmen from all four district clubs.
Odd Fellows and Rebekahs lodges of Myrtle Point hold a joint installation at Grange Hall on Saturday evening starting at 8 o'clock. Grand officers and newly elected officers for Rebekahs and Odd Fellows are listed with titles such as noble grand and vice grand and include Mrs Archie Train and Mrs J H Mahaffe among others.
Coquille Valley Country club members meet next Monday evening January 15 at 8 for electing officers for the coming year and other business. All members urged to attend.
Myrtle Point High School Lettermen's Club will hold an amateur hour at the next assembly Friday January 19 at 2 pm Bill Davenport will preside as master of ceremonies and students and faculty are urged to contact Davenport or Ross Pinkley to participate Four talent classes will be judged serious humorous instrumental and vocal with impartial city judges.
Bill Downing of Myrtle Point Post 38 calls for packed toys by Saturday January 13 at the Legion hall. Toys collected at Union High School and Junior High Friday January 12 will be shipped to Philadelphia and then to Europe via CARE for distribution to children.
G B Goddard announced an evening woodworking class for adults to be taught by Ray Neugart the industrial arts instructor. The ten week course meets Tuesdays from 7 to 9 45 pm starting Jan 18 with prorated fees from 12 to 8 dollars based on enrollment. Interested persons should attend Jan 16 at 7 pm at the school shop and call the high school office about bookkeeping or typing classes.
Mr Franzen says the new multi purpose gym, housed under a separate roof but connected by a covered walk, could be an ideal community center to meet the town's need. The gym seats about 1000 and includes a standard stage.
The Myrtle Point Business and Professional Women’s club will sponsor a first aid and civilian defense course for the county. Interested residents should contact Mrs. J. M. Myers at phone 393 to enroll. Henry Rank, city civilian defense head, is arranging for a qualified instructor.
Postmaster Milton Schroeder reports Myrtle Point postoffice has more than doubled mail volume in ten years. In 1930s figures the year 18950 price sales hit 23,174.59 dollars, up 2,122.02 from 1949, while ten years ago the business was 9,826.02 dollars. Christmas mail volume this year matches last year.
Construction on the Weyerhauser Timber Co. new sawmill at North Bend progresses on schedule with about 500 workers on site. The 300000 foot capacity plant features a main double-cut unit, gang saw remanufacturing, planing mills, kilns, power plant, shop and offices. Logs will come from Millicoma Tree Farm. no waste burner planned.
