In 1905 workers noted a three ton granite sphere at the Merchant family plot had rotated and shifted by inches. The sphere, trapped by a socket, moved again later despite measures to lock it in place. Researchers study the puzzling phenomenon while the cemetery guards six Merchant graves.
Mrs John Boosinger of Eugene will speak at the annual Woman's Day program at Myrtle Point Christian Church on January 10 1960 at 11 am. She and her husband are delegates of the US Disciples of Christ and she will discuss ecumenical world church experiences. The event precedes the churchs relocation to a Seventh Day Adventist building on Maryland Ave.
The Legislative Labor Management Interim Committee will hold a hearing at the capitol in Salem on Saturday January 9 at 9 30 a m to study a union leaders proposal. The issue involves rights to import workers to keep struck plants operating and has broad economic and philosophical implications beyond the newspaper industry. Mrs. Cora Dana widow of Marshall N. Dana died at Providence hospital in Portland on New Year’s Day from injuries after a fall en route to the family car. Funeral at Colonial mortuary with burial in Fairview cemetery. Born February 14 1889 at Norway near Myrtle Point she spent youth in that area. Dana longtime editor of the Portland Ore Journal and now U S National Bank Portland official. Survived by husband three children Marshall N Jr Mrs M L Lothian and Mrs Bertram A Betz eight grandchildren and several relatives.
Dun and Bradstreet counts 850 businesses in Coos County as of January 1960 based on the reference book’s manufacturer wholesaler and retailer listings. The figure excludes many service and professional firms such as beauty barber shops security dealers and real estate brokers. Principal communities show 292 North Bond 147 Coquille 127 Myrtle Point 91.
The Jaycees announce their annual Bosses Night Banquet will be held Monday January 11 at the Anglers in Myrtle Point. speaker will be Jack Lively Springfield attorney and past Oregon Jaycees president. Awards will recognize outstanding young farmers and a distinguished service award for city state and national improvement.
The Coos Curry Pioneer and Historical association will meet at the Coos Curry museum in North Bend this Saturday afternoon. The curator will report on two years of operation since the museum opened January 1958. Refreshments will be served by the Bay areas friends.
Mrs Eisenhower admired a Myrtlewood bowl and nuts sent by Myrtle Point Rotary Club. The White House thanked Jack Davis and club members for the gesture aiming to foster goodwill with 54 nations. Mary Jane McCaffree, secretary, conveyed warm appreciation and best wishes for the coming year.

Bruce Whitaker has been appointed field representative of the Oregon Society for Crippled Children and Adults, replacing Lee Zumwalt as executive director of the Crippled Children Society of Idaho. He will direct the state-wide Easter Seal community service program and explain services to volunteers and families of handicapped children. Whitaker, a Myrtle Point native, graduated from Oregon State College and previously served as assistant director of the Easter Seal camp for handicapped youths in Coos County last summer.
Dr Carl Albertson of North Bend Medical group is the featured speaker at the Myrtle Point Baptist annual business meeting. The event Friday night January 8 begins at 7 30 with officer reports and musical numbers. Albertson speaks about 8 30. Refreshments follow. All members and friends invited.

The mayor proclaims January 1960 as March of Dimes Month, urging support and noting polio birth defects and arthritis as concerns.
