Babson predicts no US Soviet war in 1960 but warns of a coming educational war. He says Berlin will stay stable, Russia under Mr K trims armaments, while the US doubles emphasis on education with higher teacher salaries and federal aid. He urges focus on discipline and math teaching.
Seventeen entries competed in the Junior Chamber of Commerce Christmas lighting contest. Allen Schroeder won in group 1 with a colorful window scene. Homer Robinette led group 2 with a Santa and reindeer roof display. Jane Dement topped group 3 with an extra bright Christmas lights home.
Miss Lilian Farley notifies Coos county voters of a special school election on January 18 to elect seven board members for the reorganized district R41 Myrtle Point. Polls open 2 pm to 8 pm with zones and candidate rules outlined. petitions due seven days before, nominations five days prior. The Myrtle Point Herald will publish more details before election.
Miss Darlene Barkley, 16, of Bridge Route Myrtle Point, daughter of Mr and Mrs Howard Barkley, has won a national Kraft Foods contest. She receives a giant Hammond space map of the solar system after Kraft Foods Chicago selected her entry Sonny Dome from hundreds of thousands of names.
Herald unable to publish a magazine piece by Charles W. Chandler due to unforeseen circumstances. The article covers the controversial topic of flooridation and will be released when possible.
A family gathering was enjoyed on Christmas Eve at the home of Mr and Mrs Lowell Giles and family in Bandon. Their guests were Mr and Mrs Dow Beckhart and family of Coos Bay. Mr and Mrs Vance Russell of Ullle.
Coquille Valley Elks lodge hosts a Teen Age New Year Eve dance at the lodge hall in Coquille. George Linn says all teens are invited with free admission refreshments and noise makers. Dancing begins at 9 30 p m and continues as long as teens want to dance. Eligibility is age based only, not on relation to an Elk member.
Gene Parsons of Myrtle Point was injured in a Thursday evening accident on Route 43 near Coquille. He suffered a broken rib and two punctured lungs when his car failed to negotiate a curve, struck a pole off the highway shoulder and crashed into a tree. He was released from hospital.
