Secretary of State Earl T. Newbry completes a standard list of approved glazing materials for motor vehicles under a 1953 Oregon law. Starting January 1, 1954, all new cars registered in Oregon must have windshields and windows with approved glazing. after January 1, replacing any window or windshield with unapproved material will be illegal.
Cub Scouts and parents are invited to a meeting tonight at 7 30 at the Scout building. Laverne Noyes Ben Daniels Don Driscoll Paul Franzen and others will discuss den organization and the Cub Scouting program. Everett Robbins from Coquille spoke last Thursday on scouting assets and early training for younger boys. Arlo Duncan was elected Cub Scoutmaster. all district parents with Cub Scout age boys are urged to attend.
The Oregon traffic safety division lists five fatal crashes in 1953 as the year’s worst. Lane County saw two deadly wrecks including a high speed collision scattering debris and a car plunging into a lake. Yamhill County, Jackson County, and another Lane County crash each caused multiple deaths, with total 19 lives lost in these incidents and 54 in all multiple-death crashes that year.
Myrtle Point city officials report no bids were opened for the new library construction. Bids previously received exceeded the $25 000 bond total, forcing rejection. The council plans a meeting with the architect and library board to seek further plan reductions before the next council meeting on January 18.
Ernie's Gun Shop relocates from the Thornton building to the Estelle building at 310 Spruce Street after a move last weekend. The First Presbyterians hold a Fellowship dinner after Sunday service followed by the annual congregational business meeting. Reports from all organizations will be heard and officers elected. The church marks high attendance with a new educational building. Dr. and Mrs. A. Theodore Smith enter sixth year of pastorate. New members will be received next Sunday.
Burrel R. Banning, 98, died December 28 in Phoenix after a short illness. He and his wife Lizzie, buried in Los Angeles, were well known in Coog county. Survived by son Ray and several nieces and nephews.
LaDonna Hoffer, born at 11 20 a m Friday January 1 weighing 7 pounds 10 ounces, is Myrtle's first New Year baby. Her mother is Mrs Gene Hoffer of Agness and Dr Harry N Mook supervised the delivery. Grandparents include Mr and Mrs Charles Billings and Mrs L Gleason. Others in the family are Yvonne Frances Jean Eugene and twin boys Lester and Leslie and Ann.
Postmaster Milton Schroeder told the Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce that city mail delivery could start between January 18 and February 1, pending postal department go‑ahead. Two daily deliveries will run, with foot delivery inside the city and mounted service for certain outside routes once residents install mail boxes or slots. The Chamber’s annual banquet is set for January 27 at the hotel, with a chicken dinner at 1.50.
Governor Paul L. Patterson, who became governor in December 1952 after Douglas McKay resigned, announces his bid for the Republican nomination in May. He pledges honesty and integrity in state government and says he has toured the state to hear concerns, outlining a program to pursue good government.
Senator Ulett announces a welfare plan meeting to discuss the new state welfare law.
