The item denounces POWs still in the Soviet Union who refuse to come home and join the Reds. It claims government agencies and relatives press them, with limited success, to renounce communism and return to America, noting unknown methods used by the Reds.
Henry Schroeder and John Carl visited Pacific Grove California with their wives to see the annual return of Alaskan and Canadian Monarch butterflies. They witnessed thousands clinging to pines and noted the event as a remarkable seasonal display. One butterfly was kept as a souvenir. none were bought for $500.
After a Sunday service Presbyterians held a congregational meeting with a pot luck dinner. Trustees elected: Mrs E C Barker, Oliver Myers, Henry A Schroeder. Treasurer Mrs W J Crim. Secretary Mrs Henry A Schroeder. Sunday School Supt Mrs A Theodore Smith. Deaconesses: Mrs Tom Guer in, Mrs Oliver Myers.
Family Night will be observed at the Methodist Church Sunday at 6 30 p m with a potluck lunch of sandwiches salad and dessert. Games for all ages follow a devotional service and a movie showing concluding the evening. The film is Beginning of The Rainbow.
A drivers license examiner will be on duty in Myrtle Point at city hall on Wednesday January 20 1954 from 10 a m to 3 p m an official notice from the Secretary of State said.
Arthur T Train oldest Living Pioneer of Southern Coos County died Thursday Jan 7 at Mast hospital. Funeral held Saturday at Schroeder Funeral Parlor at 2 pm with interment in Norway Cemetery. Survivors include widow Iva Myrtle Point three sons six daughters and several step children. Born March 11 1855 in Baraboo Wisconsin he moved to Oregon in 1906 living in Marshfield Myrtle Point and later Portland. His life recalled pioneer experiences in Deadwood South Dakota and travels with captain Grant March on the Yellowstone River to the Little Bighorn battlefield.
Contrary to reports, Am Roush Service Station at 4th and Spruce remains the license hub for all motor vehicles including automobile truck trailer and motorcycle licenses. Charles Grove from the secretary of state's office confirmed Myrtle Point will continue to offer license sales there.
The Myrtle Point Saddle Club will hold its annual banquet January 22 at the Coquille Valley Country Club with about one hundred members and guests expected. Reservations are urged by Mrs. Ernest Labart and Mrs. Ellis Wilberger. Music by Jack Ellis orchestra. 1954 officers to be installed led by George M as president with Ellis Wilberger Mildred King Tex Billingsley and Ernest Labart in key roles.
Wallace B. Dement of Myrtle Point was elected president at the Coos County Livestock Association annual meeting held in Coquille. Tom Guerin was reelected vice president and Mrs. Tom Guerin secretary. Directors named include J J Morris D R Curry Hollis Mast and Frank Rema. Dement appointed a predators animal control committee and the group discussed increasing trappers and the predator control program.
A NAM study by the Portland office reports Oregon's federal income tax paid rose 20 fold from 1941 to 1952 while total income grew three fold. In 1941 per capita tax was 20.97 dollars against 756.65 income. by 1952 tax per capita reached 297.99 on 1779.84 income.
Myrtle Point High School junior class presents a three act comedy Cracked Nuts tonight in the high school gym at 8 p.m. The plot follows two college coeds and two friends with a sleepwalking housekeeper a fortune hunter and several quirky characters creating chaotic humor.
Mountain States Power and Pacific Power & Light announce board approval to submit a stock exchange based consolidation to stockholders. Exchange set at 9 Pacific shares for 10 Mountain States shares and 1 Pacific $100 preferred for 2 Mountain States $50 preferred. Regulatory approval needed. personnel changes expected to be minimal. service regions and customers listed in Oregon, Idaho, Washington, Montana, and Wyoming.
Washington January 11 1934 the second session of the eighty third Congress opens with formalities and swearing in of members. The article notes routine committee assignments and initial proceedings as lawmakers begin their work in writing the Congressional Record.
Myrtle Point residents urged to boycott breakfast Thursday to boost March of Dimes funds. Restaurants and shops join Chief Rick Vines in supporting the drive with profits from coffee and baked goods. Cub Scouts plan Saturday blocks of dimes downtown to further the fundraiser. A Thursday night basketball game and a box social follow to raise more money.
Babson Park Massachusetts January 7 1954 Babson discusses planning for servicemen after discharge urging wives to discuss future with husbands. The 18th annual Western Oregon Livestock Association meeting will review 1964 livestock prospects and management practices January 25 to 27 at the Senator Hotel in Salem. Governor Patterson will speak January 26 at 11:30 a.m. about group concerns.
University of Oregon hosts Dad’s Club annual Dad to Be event January 23 in the Erb Memorial Union ballroom. Tickets cost 1.50 and go on sale at the Student Union main desk Wednesday. Karl Onthank predicts a complete sellout as fathers are urged to buy early. A barbershop quartet and eight university quartets will perform, with a luncheon theme King for a Day.
