Proceeds from a recent Badie Mawkins Day dance will fund a sound movie projector for Myrtle Point junior high and elementary schools. Fr Mel drum notes the total. Santa Claus entertained, with Lions members maintaining order as the program proceeded.
Lt Comdr Merle J. Randleman, son of Mr and Mrs Claude A Randleman of Myrtle Point, completed the first class of the Naval School General Line in Monterey California. Former Naval Reserve officer he transferred to the regular navy and finished an intensive ten month program broader than typical reserve training.
Lense Miller, a Bataan Death March survivor and Bible Institute student from Los Angeles, will speak at the Assembly of God church in Myrtle Point, under Rev Roy K Reed. The event, supported by five cooperating churches, highlights Miller’s faith and planned missionary service in the Philippines.
More than 700 youngsters attended a Christmas party and free performance of Alice in Wonderland at the Hilend theatre in Myrtle Point last Saturday. Santa Claus appeared and free Christmas bags were handed out by the Léons.
The Coquille area hosts the Steelhead derby with many catches recorded this week. Bud Mast of Myrtle Point led with a 15 pound 8 ounce steelhead winning first prize for the second week. Fred Miller and W E Kirstein, both from Myrtle Point, took second and third with 13 pound 12 ounce and 13 pound 8 ounce catches respectively. The Myrtle Point Junior High School band performed in Broadbent on Monday afternoon, delighting a crowd of locals. Sixty four members wore new uniforms as Arnold Melby supervised and directed the concert, with Mr and Mrs Thomas Howe and children visiting Roseburg earlier.
Myrtle Point High School presented The Night of Jan 18th in the Senior High auditorium last Friday. The court room drama featured student actors including Mark Putnam as district attorney and Skip Ohlson as prosecutor, with applause for the clerk Tinker Hatfield and others who brought humor and realism to the courtroom scene.
Police Chief Albert Walsh cautions drivers on 6th Street between Spruce and Ash about faulty parking meters. He warns tickets will be issued to violators and notes meter jams caused by coins left in the mechanism.
In regular session at city hall on Monday the council selected Ralph Whitaker to chair in the mayor’s absence. A motion approved issuing licenses for punch-bowl operators at 75 dollars per quarter and notifying residents on Bothnick Street of interest charges on grading and graveling payments starting January 1, 1949. Another motion levied 50 dollars semi annually for the Pastime pinball machine.
Private Homer E Huntley serves with the Eighth Engineer Squadron of the First Cavalry division in Tokyo Japan. He maintains roads across ten prefectures using motorized graders amid occupational duty. Huntley resides in Myrtle Point with his father Ben Huntley.
A small flue fire at a residence owned by Mr Carver on Mary land Avenue sparked a Tuesday morning alarm at 7 30. The fire department responded quickly and kept the blaze under control with very little damage reported.
About 306 people attended the Turkey Shoot at the Myrtle Point fair grounds Sunday under Myrtle Point Beating Red and Gun Club auspices. 67 turkeys were awarded to winners as the event ran until darkness. The club credited donors from the Myrtle Point Lions Club Swigert Mitchum Myrtle Point Veneer Harmony Mills and individuals including Harold Watzling Harold Stemmler and V V Hagedorn. The county fair board cooperated and a missing kid glove was found on the grounds and can be claimed at The Herald office.
Miland Theatre owner Mr. Austin Dodge announces installation of two Kehler light plants enabling the theatre to generate its own power for shows. One unit is installed at Miland, the other at the Bandon theatre in which Dodge is invested.
Irene Mullen of Myrtle Point hauled in an 18 pound 0 ounce rainbow or steelhead style big fish last Sunday. The catch enters the weekly competition as sisters claim dominance in the sport.
Funeral services were held for Alfred E Roberts who drowned when a dam washed out near Sitkum. He and companion Earl Miller died. Roberts survived by three sons and four daughters. Burial in Civil Bend cemetery Roseburg Oregon. Joyce Hall home for Christmas with parents in Sitkum.

Myrtle Point Rotary heard speaker Al Smith of Coos Bay Lumber discuss Alaska timber potential. He outlined fresh logging methods needed due to moss and limits on heavy machinery. Twenty members attended with Dr. M. D. Kennedy and Robert Sheedy as guests and several new members announced.
Wookindige has received a carload of sewer pipe believed to have been long awaited since the war end. The shipment will aid local plumbing projects and improveage infrastructure conditions.

The church choir presented the cantata Celestial Light consisting of eleven numbers. The program featured soprano and alto voices with tenors and basses. Mrs. Eula Moyes and Mrs. Esther Belt provided vocal solos and accompanied the choir on piano.
